When it comes to spring flowers, everyone’s mind tends to jump to the daffodils and tulips that are among the first bits of color to push their way up through the ground. But if you didn’t get around to planting those bulbs last autumn, hellebores are your last-minute option to bring some early life to your garden as soon as this year.

Also known as the “Lenten rose,” Helleborus orientalis is a hardy perennial originally native to Eurasia, according to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. The species gets its name from its habit of blossoming in early spring, which typically coincides with the Christian observance of the lead-up to Easter.

Even as an import, the Lenten rose is quite adaptable to much of the U.S., suitable for cold climates and performing quite well through Zones 4 and 5. But where this plant really stands out is its ability to perform during the chillier months when most other specimens remain mostly or fully dormant. By late winter and the earliest bits of spring, the plant begins to blossom with impressive flowers, often just before or right around the same time as daffodils, tulips, and other bulbs.

“The cup-shaped blooms come in a wide range of colors, from white to nearly black, and in solid, speckled, and striped patterns,” Janet Loughrey of Garden Design previously told Best Life.

Once they’ve opened, the flowers stay in bloom for a month or more before they dry and are replaced by thick, green foliage. The bonus here is that you can likely expect that color to stick around.

“The foliage remains green year-round except for in colder zones,” Loughrey told Best Life.

In terms of timing, you’re fine to pick up the trowel and start planting hellebores in early spring to take full advantage of those early flowers. Try to pick a spot that receives partial shade (even though places that get full light during the winter when trees shed their leaves are fine, too). Just make sure it’s in a spot that receives direct sunlight for less than half the day during the hot summer months, according to Southern Living.

If you’re bringing multiple plants into your garden, you can also bunch the flowers into groups of up to half a dozen and space each cluster about a foot and a half to two feet apart. Make sure the area has good soil drainage, too!

While they require plenty of water right after being planted, another perk of Helleborus orientalis is that it hardly requires any extra maintenance for the rest of the typical growing season. Of course, this changes during periods of intense heat or drought, so be sure to give them plenty of water when the mercury rises or the weather dries out, per Southern Living.

Of course, hellebores aren’t the only options for spring planting that can get your garden looking lively before the season really kicks off. Flowers like pansies and violas can be planted in the ground by March for colorful flowers, and creeping phlox and bleeding heart can be planted as late as early April, according to Gardenia.net.

Creeping thyme is an excellent grass alternative.

The go-to for ground cover might typically be grass, but gardeners know it’s far from the only option. In a recent post to Instagram, @housekeeping_101 points out that creeping thyme (or wild thyme) can be a fantastic replacement.

According to the author, the sprawling plant (whose scientific name is Thymus serpyllum) can not only add a pop of color to your lawn, but also bring a pleasant fragrance as it blooms throughout most of the year.

Besides not having to bust out that lawnmower nearly as often, there are plenty of good reasons to consider swapping in this sprawling herb for grass. According to The Spruce, creeping thyme is perennial in moderate climates and grows low like a ground vine that removes the requirement for mowing.

And that’s not the only reduction in yardwork: The plant can help choke out weeds and is relatively drought-resistant and deer-resistant. It can also be a solution for some turf where grass struggles, including sandy or gravelly soil.

How to plant creeping thyme:

Ready to replace your lawn? Before you get started, it’s important to note that while Thymus serpyllum is incredibly hardy, it thrives in USDA Zones Four through Nine, according to the Farmer’s Almanac. If you’re going for a large area, keep in mind that you’ll also need at least one plant for every square foot of coverage.

As with many spring plantings, you should wait for the last frost date to pass before getting to work. This time before temperatures rise and the sun becomes warmer will give it time to establish itself in your yard.

Make sure you remove any grasses in the area you’re hoping to cover, loosen the soil, add about an inch layer of compost, and place the plants in a shallow hole before watering thoroughly. From then on, you’ll only have to water them every 10 days or so amid normal weather conditions, per The Spruce.

Not ready to get rid of all of your grass just yet? Creeping thyme is also the perfect add-on to rockier areas where other plants struggle, and can be a great way to line your garden paths with pops of color.

According to the long-term outlook, the southern part of the Eastern Seaboard (including North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia) will be warmer than usual throughout the spring. But while the area can expect a slightly less rainy April, there could be more precipitation than normal in May.

Meanwhile, Florida is also expected to see a slightly warmer April than it’s used to, before temperatures return to average the following month. It could also be slightly drier in the earlier part of spring.

4. The Midwest and Great Lakes

After months of brutal snow and persistently frigid conditions, much of the Midwest will get a bit of a rebound this spring. Places like Michigan and the states surrounding the Great Lakes will be slightly warmer than average, according to the Farmer’s Almanac’s outlook.

Your Ultimate Spring Cleaning Checklist

1. Wash your walls and baseboards.

“An often-forgotten part of spring cleaning is washing your walls,” points out Aaron Christensen, resident cleaning expert and vice president of growth at Homeaglow. “Focus on high-traffic areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and mudrooms.”

To do this, he recommends simply using a sponge and a bucket of no-rinse cleaner like Spic and Span. “It is especially important to remove dust and residue around counters and on painted baseboards,” he adds.

As for those dreaded baseboards, Marla Mock, president of Molly Maid, a Neighborly company, recommends first using the brush attachment of your vacuum “to loosen and capture dust.”

Then, “Use a soft-bristled brush to sweep away any dust remaining in the grooves,” she continues. “Next, fill a bucket with a gallon of hot water and a few squirts of dish soap or a cup of vinegar. Use a microfiber cloth and soapy water to wipe down the baseboards. Only work on one small section at a time. Once that section is clean, dry it with a new cloth, and then continue cleaning along the wall.”

2. Wipe down outlet covers.

This may seem like an insignificant task, but you’d be amazed how dirty outlet covers can get over the course of a year. That’s why Joel Worthington, president of Mr. Electric, a Neighborly company, recommends cleaning them, “especially in well-used areas like living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms.”

“Cleaning wipes can be used to remove grime and dirt from the outlet covers,” he says.

3. Clean your shower curtain and liner.

While you may scrub your tub from time to time, when you start spring cleaning, it’s time to wash off those shower curtains, too.

“Shower curtains and liners are one of those things most people forget about,” says cleaning expert Marcos Francos. “They should be laundered if possible, thrown away if the liner is riddled with mold, or washed with a disinfectant such as white vinegar. The majority of shower curtains can be cleaned in a normal gentle cycle of your washing machine.”

4. Clean your shower head and hoses.

Shower heads can easily develop mineral buildup, as well as soap scum, mildew, and even mold.

To clean your shower head, Bailey Carson, head of cleaning at Handy, previously told Best Life that it’s best to combine equal parts water and white vinegar, as the latter will break up mineral deposits.

If your shower head is removable, you can unscrew it and place it in a bowl of this solution. If not, Carson recommends filling a plastic bag with the solution and tying it around your shower head. Either way, let it soak for a couple hours, then rinse.

If your shower has a flexible hose attached to the shower head, you’ll want to clean that, too. “Look carefully at the braiding of the hose—between those lines, mold often grows and hides,” says Francos.

5. Disinfect the base of your toilet.

The seat, lid, and bowl on your toilet likely get regular TLC, but many people fail to notice how filthy the pedestal underneath their porcelain throne can get.

“I often see this as one of the dirtiest places in a person’s home—polluted with dust and urine,” says Francos. “Mold and mildew love to grow here… Use a multipurpose [cleaner] and a rag to clean these areas, then finish with a dry towel to remove remaining hair and dust.”

6. Scrub all grout and caulk.

By nature, grout and caulk usually exist where there’s moisture. “It’s important to keep them clean to remove any mold spores or particles that colonies can use for growth,” notes Michael Rubino, a mold and air quality expert and founder of HomeCleanse.

To do this, he says all you’ll need is hydrogen peroxide and microfiber rags. “Spray the hydrogen peroxide on the surface, let it sit for at least 10 minutes, and then wipe with a microfiber towel.”

7. Deep clean your fridge.

Think wiping down your fridge is enough to get it properly clean? Think again.

Francos says you’ll first want to empty out your fridge and vacuum up any crumbs. Then, pull out any drawers and wash them in the sink with dish soap and hot water, and use a rag with water and dish soap to wipe down the inside. Clean any glass with glass cleaner, and you’re good to go!

For those seeking a quicker option, Francos recommends a steam cleaner. “Steam and wipe—it is very fast and easy.”

8. Deep clean your stove.

That splattered lasagna you never wiped up, the French fry that escaped into the coils—when spring rolls around, it’s time to clean all that up.

“For some ovens, you can run an automatic cleaning cycle. This produces a lot of heat and melts the mess inside your oven into ashes. With this, you will have to vacuum and then wipe out what is left,” says Francos.

Even better, however, is cleaning it with a steamer. “There are no dangerous chemicals, and they even do a better job” than traditional oven-cleaning methods, he says.

9. Clean your dishwasher.

Yes, soap and hot water are running through your dishwasher constantly, but debris can still get caught in the filter, or all that residual moisture can lead to some foul odors and soap scum.

One easy option to clean your dishwasher is to use a dishwasher cleaning tablet. Or, to get rid of odors and soap scum, you can first let a cup of baking soda sit at the bottom of the machine overnight. Then, run a cycle with a cup of vinegar. From there, run a final empty cycle on hot water to ensure all the cleaning products have filtered through.

10. Run a clean cycle on your garbage disposal.

“I think a cleaning method that has always surprised people is using ice to clean their garbage disposal,” Ron Shimek, president of Mr. Appliance, a Neighborly company, tells Best Life.

“After running your disposal for 30 seconds to make sure it’s clear, turn it off and pour in two cups of ice, one tablespoon of Kosher salt, and one tablespoon of Lemon or lime juice,” he instructs. “When you turn the disposal on, it will first be a little noisy but calm down to an even hum. After running for a minute like that, turn your faucet on, and you will hear the sound change again.”

“It only takes a minute or so; the ice is gone, and your disposer is clean and smelling fresh,” he notes.

11. Vacuum and mop under and behind major appliances.

While you may give a cursory sweep under your stove or fridge when you’re cleaning the kitchen, odds are you’re not actually moving those appliances away from the wall to vacuum and mop underneath and behind them—but you should be.

“If you can pull these items out without scratching your floors, I highly recommend you do so,” says Francos. “You will be amazed by the amount of things under them.”

“These areas can get really nasty over time with dust, grime, and food scraps that can impact how well the appliance is working,” agrees Bree Steele, an interior designer and the trade accounts manager at RJ Living.

Plus, this type of debris can attract insects and rodents.

If you’re not able to move your appliances, cleaning influencer Jill Koch (@jillcomesclean) recommends this under-appliance microfiber duster.

12. Vacuum your furniture.

The floor and rugs around your furniture likely get a good cleaning on a regular basis, but many people forget to give their upholstered furniture the same kind of attention.

“Make sure you use a crevice device on your vacuum to get in those hard-to-reach places, remove all pillows, and vacuum underneath and behind them,” suggests Francos.

13. Wipe down behind your TV.

The top of your TV? Dusted once a week (if you’re good). Behind it? Well, that’s a different story.

“Electricity is a magnet for dust and you will find large amounts of dust behind your television and electronics,” says Francos.

“Make sure to dust and vacuum these locations very well and wipe your electronics with a microfiber cloth,” he advises. “Not only will your home be free of even more dust and allergens, but your electronic devices will have a longer lifespan since dust is often the cause of electronics malfunctions.”

14. Flip your mattress.

Your sheets get washed on a regular basis, but when was the last time you cleaned your mattress?

“Mattresses can often become homes for harmful microbial growth if steps aren’t taken to properly clean and take care of them,” cautions Rubino.

“To prevent this, take everything off the mattress, HEPA vacuum it, and flip it to the opposite side (check with the manufacturer’s recommendations on if this is possible or other ways to introduce air),” he advises. “This process aerates the mattress, which prevents moisture buildup and removes any particles that have made their way onto the surface.”

15. Clean your washing machine.

Just because its function is to wash, doesn’t mean the washing machine stays clean.

Shimek says one easy way to clean it is to buy a product made especially for this. “Most are tablets that can quickly be dropped in and run with an empty cycle.”

If you’re looking for a natural way to clean your washing machine, he recommends mixing ¼ cup of baking soda with a ¼ cup of water and pouring that into the detergent dispenser. Then, add four cups of plain white vinegar right into the tub.

“Vinegar loosens the detergent and hard water buildup and lets the washer rinse clean,” he explains. Run the washer empty on a heavy-duty cycle.

16. Clean your dryer.

Not cleaning your dryer can be a potential fire hazard as lint accumulates.

“The buildup of lint or other debris blocking the vent can cause bacteria growth or harmful gasses to form like carbon monoxide,” Jason Kapica, president of Dryer Vent Wizard, previously told Best Life.

But to clean more than just the lint trap, you’ll want to call in an appliance professional since the machine needs to be disassembled.

“With the dryer vent, it’s more the tools a professional [has] at their disposal that allows them to get into all the curves and bends of the venting system and make sure all the lint is removed without harming your venting,” explains Shimek.

17. Wash porous items with a botanical laundry additive.

Bathmats, mattress pads, towels, bedding—you probably wash these regularly. But your day-to-day detergent may not be doing enough to properly clean them.

“Porous items are particularly difficult to clean because microscopic particles like pollen can settle within the fibers of the surface,” explains Rubino. “Using a botanical laundry additive can help remove microscopic particles from the surface so they don’t continue to build up and become airborne when the surface is disturbed.”

18. Disinfect high-touch surfaces.

Spring doesn’t mean the end of cold, flu, and Covid season, so it’s a great time to clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces, says Armeka Townsend, a cleaning expert at Zep Inc.

Doorknobs, light switches, remote controls, and countertops, can be hotspots for germs, Townsend notes, adding that you’ll also want to disinfect less-obvious high-touch surfaces like appliance handles, banisters, and faucet handles.

“Use a disinfectant spray or wipe to clean these surfaces, following the product’s instructions for proper dwell time to ensure maximum germ removal.”

19. Dust your doorframes.

The tops of your tables, bookcases, and light fixtures may get the occasional dusting, but you might be neglecting those doorframes, which are veritable magnets for dust.

“Get a step stool for this job. Use a microfiber cloth and Pledge and get dusting,” says Francos. “Make sure you get the top of the door and both sides of the door. Next, do all the trim around the door—especially the top. This usually will turn your microfiber rag brown with dust.”

20. Vacuum your lampshades.

A little dusting and vacuuming around your lampshades can go a long way toward making your home cleaner this spring.

“Using a microfiber cloth is often good enough to get your lampshade clean,” says Francos. “For those who need more than that, use a vacuum hose with the dusting attachment—the circle attachment with the long hairs.”

And for anything the vacuum won’t pick up, a lint roller will do the trick.

21. Clean your ceiling fans.

“When was the last time you gave your ceiling fans some love?” asks Tina Priestly, owner and CEO of Ready, Set, Refresh. “Those things are like dust magnets, silently collecting grime while you sleep.”

A standard duster will certainly work here (just be careful if you’re standing on a ladder!), but the long handle of the under-appliance microfiber duster will make this chore even simpler.

22. Vacuum your cabinets and drawers.

Crumbs, dirt, hair, and dust can create a mess inside your cabinets and drawers—and spring is the perfect time to tackle that often-overlooked layer of grime.

“Empty each drawer in your kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom one at a time,” suggests Mock. “Use a hand vacuum to remove any little crumbs or dust. Then, use a damp cloth with warm water to wipe down the inside and outside of the drawer for a thorough clean. Allow the drawer to dry before replacing the contents.”

This is also a great time to de-clutter and organize said drawers!

23. Launder your curtains.

You vacuum and spot-clean your rugs, but when was the last time your curtains got a thorough cleaning?

Francos recommends laundering or dry cleaning your curtains when you’re doing a top-to-bottom cleaning of your home. “Lots of dust builds up through the year—or years.”

24. Wash your windows.

This might sound like an obvious task, but if you’re going to take the time to wipe down every window in your house, you’ll want to make sure you’re doing it most effectively.

“It’s important not to clean windows, specifically the glass, when exposed to direct sunlight. The sun will warm the glass, causing the soap solution to streak,” explains Steve Arnone, manager of product services at Marvin.

“For best results, clean when windows are in the shade, and work from top to bottom if you live in a multi-story home.”

Arnone also recommends starting with the outside of windows “because it allows you to catch and clean up any water that may have snuck inside.”

25. And your window frames and tracks.

In addition to washing the glass on your windows, be sure you’re cleaning the tracks and the frames—”which tend to get dirty with dirt and debris over time,” notes Steele.

“The easiest way to clean this out is with a vacuum (with a brush attachment if you have one) to get rid of the dirt,” she recommends.

For tough-to-reach window tracks (as well as sliding glass door tracks), use an old toothbrush “to dislodge the rest of the dirt,” suggests Mock. “If necessary, sprinkle the tracks with a light dusting of baking soda, spritz with a mixture of vinegar and water, and leave for five minutes. Wipe up the solution and grime with a clean rag or paper towel.”

26. Replace the batteries in smoke detectors.

Not all spring cleaning tasks have to be about getting your home spick-and-span—some are about making it safer, too.

You should test and replace the batteries in your smoke detectors every six months, so make it part of your spring cleaning routine and leave yourself a note to do it again in the fall.

If you have separate carbon monoxide detectors, change those batteries, too.

27. Have your chimney cleaned.

That creosote buildup in your chimney could be putting your home and family at risk. If you’re doing a major cleaning push this spring, make sure to have a professional come and sweep your chimney to reduce your risk of a house fire and carbon monoxide poisoning.

28. Change air conditioner filters.

“Air filters are the first line of defense both for the HVAC system and your indoor air,” explains Rubino. “These barriers help eliminate particles so that they don’t continue to circulate throughout the indoor space. It also helps remove them before they reach the HVAC, which can help avoid microbial growth in the unit itself.”

Jennifer Gregory, brand manager of Molly Maid, recommends changing furnace and air conditioner filters every three to six months in a pet-free home. “If you have pets or if members of your household suffer from allergies, change them every two months.”

29. Clean exhaust fans.

Another way to maintain indoor air quality is to clean often-overlooked exhaust fans.

“Vacuum the bathroom exhaust fan with your vacuum cleaner’s brush attachment,” suggests Jack White, senior director of technical operations at Rainbow Restoration, a Neighborly Company.

Next, remove the filter from your kitchen exhaust fan “and soak it in hot water and ammonia for an hour,” White advises. “Wearing rubber gloves and a mask, scrub and rinse the filter. Leave it out to dry completely before installing it back in the vent hood.”

Hot water and vinegar is another option if you’d prefer a natural cleaner.

30. Check your gutters.

Spring cleaning doesn’t end with your house’s interior spaces. The exterior has probably been more neglected, having experienced “wear and tear in the winter months from storms, snow, wind, and accompanying debris,” points out Courtney Klosterman, home insights expert at Hippo home insurance group.

That’s why she says it’s a good idea to “check your gutters, downspouts, and nearby storm drains for blockages and signs of damage to help prevent pooling water and related structural damage.”

“Clear debris, replace broken parts, and, if your city maintains nearby storm drains, contact your city’s appropriate office to address storm drain maintenance or drainage issues,” she recommends. And be sure downspouts are directing stormwater away from the home toward storm drains.

31. Clean up your yard.

Sure, you may have summer plans to update your landscaping, but you’ll want to clean up your yard before that time comes.

“Rake your lawn and remove dead leaves, weeds, branches, and other debris that could impede your lawn’s growth,” advises Klosterman. “A clean and healthy lawn can also help prevent damage from critters.”

She also recommends trimming any broken or dead tree branches and pruning limbs that may be close to your home “to help prevent water runoff or damage during spring storms.”

“Contact a certified arborist if you have a leaning tree, extensive decay, or notice other concerning damage that may lead to your tree falling over,” she adds.

32. Don’t forget to actually create your checklist!

Shantae Duckworth, professional organizer and founder of Shantaeize Your Space, says her number-one spring cleaning tip is to create an action plan that works for you.

“Simply put, a plan without a goal is most likely not going to happen,” she notes. “If you were taking on a larger project as in a garage organization, an attic cleaning, or even just spring cleaning the kitchen, it’s really important to break it down into smaller areas and create an action plan for those small areas,” she says. “This will really help you from getting overwhelmed!”

Simple pen and paper work well, but Duckworth recommends putting your action plan in the notes section of your phone and checking off tasks as you go. She says another way to set yourself up for success is blocking out time on your calendar to complete these spring cleaning tasks.

“These areas you are cleaning did not become disorganized in one day, and it is going to take more than one day for it to get fully organized, so keep that in your mind while you’re going through your spring cleaning process,” she adds.

Influencer Miranda Harness tells her followers in a Feb. 25 TikTok that she had to stop and make a video when she spotted Walmart’s new spring shorts.

Butter yellow has been deemed the hottest spring color trend for 2024. But because it’s in the yellow family, this shade can be trickier for some to pull off “due to its potential to wash out certain skin tones,” Steven Dann, fashion stylist and CEO of Monfrère, tells Best Life.

The solution? “Incorporate butter yellow into your wardrobe this spring through strategic layering or accessorizing, perhaps using it as a pop of color against a neutral canvas of white or denim,” Dann recommends.

Another popular color standing out this spring is glacial blue, according to Vivienne Desurmont, founder of the French-style secondhand and vintage luxury shop Maison Vivienne.

“This is a serene and calming hue reminiscent of clear skies and tranquil waters,” she says, adding that it brings about a sense of freshness, sophistication, renewal, and optimism—all of which “perfectly capture the essence of the season.”

Desurmont recommends adding the peach fuzz color trend into your wardrobe with skirts, tops, or accessories.

“Pair a peach fuzz skirt with a white blouse and espadrille wedges for a stylish daytime ensemble, or layer a peach fuzz cardigan over a floral print dress for a playful twist,” she suggests.

Soft pink is also a “timeless springtime staple,” Anderson says.

“Whether in the form of a silky blouse or a ruffled skirt, this feminine hue adds a touch of sweetness to any look,” she explains. “Pair soft pink with floral prints or denim for a playful and whimsical vibe.”

Don’t rule out metallics this spring either, Ashley Full, fashion stylist and co-founder of Amour781, notes.

Allergy-proofing your skin is all about “reducing contact with allergens and strengthening the skin’s natural barrier,” Anna Chacon, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Miami, tells Best Life.

One of the most effective ways to do this is to regularly moisturize your skin, according to Chacon.

“Moisturizers create a protective layer on the skin’s surface that can help shield it from allergens,” she explains. “They also keep the skin hydrated and healthy, reducing the likelihood of cracks that can allow allergens to penetrate.”

Another crucial step to protect your skin involves simply keeping it clean. Martin Smith, MD, double board-certified allergist-immunologist and co-founder of Untoxicated Skincare, recommends that those who suffer from hay fever try to rinse off in the shower right after they’ve spent any prolonged time outdoors.

“This washes off the allergens and adds much needed moisture to your skin,” he shares.

But don’t forget to watch out for the water temperature, too. Hot water can dry out your skin and make it less protective against allergens, so Smith says you should only shower in lukewarm or cold water.

Picking the right products to use on your skin is also just as important.

Valerie Aparovich, biochemist and certified cosmetologist-esthetician at OnSkin, says consumers should check the ingredient labels in their cosmetic products to look out for any fragrances, alcohols, and preservatives, which can “stress your skin out and exacerbate its vulnerability in the face of environmental culprits.”

According to Aparovich, fragrances such as cinnamal, citral, farnesol, coumarin, eugenol, or geraniol can trigger allergies, while alcohols such as alcohol denat, ethanol, or SD alcohol can disrupt the skin barrier. Finally, preservatives such as formaldehyde releasers, methylchloroisothiazolinone, and methylisothiazolinone can increase skin sensitivity.

“Alongside that, consider minimizing makeup, as mascaras, eye shadows, and complexion products containing dyes and colorants that can cause skin and eye irritation and provoke allergic reactions,” she adds.

It’s not just your cosmetics you need to be cautious about, however. When it comes to other products your skin might react to—soap, laundry detergents, household cleaners—Chacon says it’s a good idea to opt for hypoallergenic options.

“The use of hypoallergenic products can reduce exposure to allergens,” she says. “These products are specifically formulated to minimize the risk of allergic reactions.”

Keith O’Brian, skincare expert and CEO of the cosmetics company Hydrinity, suggests searching for products with “anti-inflammatory ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, chamomile, or green tea.”

“These ingredients have soothing properties that can alleviate skin inflammation and irritation caused by allergens,” he notes.

While you surely want to protect all your skin from allergens, Aparovich says it’s important to take extra care of the skin around your eyes, because it is “naturally thinner and more sensitive than on the rest of the face.” As a result, it tends to be more reactive to external irritants, which can cause redness, puffiness, and itching.

“Avoiding harsh make-up removers and incorporating a tailored hydrating eye cream is essential to maintain this delicate skin’s well-being and support its moisture barrier,” Aparovich advises.

You should also consider wearing sunglasses when outside, as she says they “will help shield your around the eye from direct contact with allergens like pollen or dust, mitigating the risk of irritation or allergic reactions.”

But sunglasses aren’t the only thing you can wear to protect your skin. Other protective clothing including long sleeves, gloves, and hats may also help, “especially when you’re in environments where contact with allergens is likely,” Chacon says.

“They can provide a physical barrier between the skin and potential irritants,” she explains.

Some people don’t break out their sunscreen until the summer season, but this is something you should be using year-round—especially if you want to allergy-proof your skin.

“Exposure to ultraviolet radiation causes oxidative stress on the skin cells and greatly contributes to moisture evaporation, breaking the skin’s moisture barrier, making it more susceptible to adverse external stimuli, and creating a welcome gate for allergens and germs to penetrate the skin more easily,” Aparovich cautions.

The best solution? Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50.

“Sunscreen requires a thorough and generous application to work at its full potential and needs to be reapplied every two hours if you stay exposed to the sun,” Aparovich adds.

As the beginning of severe weather season in many places, spring can bring intense storms. And this week, meteorologists are warning that a large front will pass through the U.S. and generate some potentially dangerous conditions.

Meteorologists say that a 1,500-mile-long system will push through the Plains States, Southeast, and Midwest through the early part of the week, AccuWeather reports. Forecasts show that more than 100 million people could be affected by severe weather by Tuesday evening.

The storm system became active over the weekend, bringing flash flooding, strong winds, and giant hail to some places on Sunday. Forecasts show that Monday and Tuesday have an even greater risk of dangerous conditions for a large area covering from Missouri down to central Texas over to Kentucky and up to Ohio, per AccuWeather.

Throughout Monday, cities including Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and St. Louis are at a Level 3 enhanced risk on a five-point scale for severe storms, The Washington Post reports. Forecasts warn that damaging winds and tornadoes were a possibility in some areas.

The following day, the same system will progress towards the East Coast, bringing the potential for dangerous weather to the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys. According to Fox Weather, cities including Baltimore, Maryland; Charleston, West Virginia; Cincinnati, Ohio; Louisville, Kentucky; Nashville, Tennessee; and Washington, D.C. could experience intense wind damage and potentially large hail.

“We’re talking the size of baseballs,” Kendall Smith, a meteorologist for Fox Weather, said during an update. “I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t want a baseball to come crashing down while I’m driving on the highway, or even just my home in general. So you need to take those precautions today and make sure that you are ready.”

The system could also generate tornadoes in some places Tuesday, especially in parts of Ohio, Tennessee, northern Alabama, and central Mississippi, CNN reports.

While regions to the south will see increased risk of flooding and extreme thunderstorms, others will be in for another blast of winter beginning Tuesday.

“Though severe weather may be what is garnering the most attention on the storm’s southern flank, the northern side should not be ignored,” Dan Pydynowski, an AccuWeather meteorologist, said in an update.

Forecasts show that parts of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan could kick off April with fresh snow, AccuWeather reports. While Chicago may only get a wintry mix of rain and flakes, central Michigan could see six to 12 inches accumulate by tomorrow night. The storm will then shift east by Wednesday, where it could bring 12 to 24 inches to central New England in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, as well as six to 12 inches to Upstate New York.

Depending on how the system progresses, this could also shift the focus to bring even more to lower New England. “Should the storm develop far enough south, the heaviest snowstorm of the season could occur in Boston,” Alex Sosnowski, senior meteorologist with AccuWeather, explained in a forecast update.

Even after the snowflakes have stopped falling, much of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic will still be experiencing a winter-like spring.

“Several days of cold winds will accompany and follow the storm that is likely to be a slow-mover,” Sosnowski said during a forecast. “It may seem like winter finally showed up.”

Meteorologists predict that many places could be five to 15 degrees colder than their seasonal averages through the rest of the week. Temperatures could also spur extra snow flurries in parts of the Northeast, AccuWeather reports.

The further southern reaches of the storm will also place the Mid-Atlantic coast at risk of severe thunderstorms on Wednesday evening. Forecasts warn that wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour and torrential rain could hit from Washington, D.C., down through northern South Carolina.

While spring offers a reprieve from cold and flu cases, it also kicks off allergy season. If you struggle with seasonal allergies at this time every year, experts suggest looking into quercetin.

“Quercetin (which is a nutrient also found in many fruits, vegetables, and herbs) is a type of flavonoid that has antioxidant properties,” Hilbert says. “Some research has shown [quercetin can] work as a ‘mast cell stabilizer’ that helps block the release of histamine that causes inflammation, which is associated with many allergic reactions.”

Karla Robinson, MD, medical editor at GoodRx, also points to quercetin as a spring addition, noting a May 2020 study that identified the flavonoid as a “good candidate as a supplement for the management and treatment of allergic diseases, especially rhinitis.”

However, Hilbert notes that more research is needed on long-term effects—and as with any supplement, don’t introduce it to your routine without talking to your doctor first.

“Quercetin shouldn’t be mixed with certain other medications and it shouldn’t be taken by someone with kidney problems,” Robinson cautions.

Both Robinson and Hilbert point out that in sunnier seasons, you may not need to rely on a vitamin D supplement.

“Depending on your sun exposure and where you live, it’s possible for some individuals to stop taking a vitamin D supplement during the springtime if they aren’t at risk for deficiency,” Hilbert says. “Vitamin D is turned into its active, absorbable form through UV rays that can be hard to come by during the winter months. For those who live closer to the equator, spring sunshine is often effective at giving our body the daily dose of vitamin D it needs.”

But, if you spend most of your time indoors or “religiously wear sunscreen,” you might want to talk to your physician about whether you should maintain your vitamin D intake throughout the spring and summer, Hilbert adds.

Robinson recommends adding vitamin C during the spring as another way to combat allergies.

“Vitamin C is another supplement that may help treat spring allergy symptoms,” she says. “It has anti-inflammatory properties and reduces oxidative stress, which can help alleviate allergy symptoms like nasal congestion.”

St. John’s wort, a flowering shrub native to Europe, is a popular supplement that can treat mild to moderate depression. According to Robinson, it may also be taken to treat seasonal affective disorder (a kind of depression associated with changing seasons). This is most common during winter, meaning that some people may not need to supplement with St. John’s wort when more pleasant weather settles in.

“Symptoms of seasonal affective disorder generally go away in the spring when there is more sunlight,” Robinson notes. “It’s a good idea to stop taking St. John’s wort if you don’t need it because research is ongoing regarding its safety for long-term use. In some cases, it can have negative side effects when used long-term and dangerous interactions with other medications.”

Zinc is another supplement to consider adding to your routine this spring.

“Zinc can also help combat allergy symptoms, and those who have a zinc deficiency have been shown to be more susceptible to pollen allergies, so getting tested for this nutrient can help see if supplementation would be important,” Hilbert says.

However, zinc can also “deplete other nutrients” if you take it in high doses or in supplement form over a long period, she warns. In light of this, you may want to consider adding more zinc-rich foods to your diet.

“Good food sources of zinc include whole grains, milk and dairy products, red meat, and nuts/seeds,” Hilbert says.

With the arrival of spring, we also have access to more in-season fruits and vegetables, so you may be able to cut vitamin A supplements and others that support immune health in the winter.

“Getting this nutrition from food is often better absorbed so if we can get [them that way], this is ideal!” Hilbert says. “Fruits and vegetables that are high in important immune-boosting nutrients are bell peppers, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli, sun-exposed mushrooms, carrots, garlic, etc.—which are all more abundant during springtime.”

Hilbert also notes that you can get vitamin C and selenium from these foods, so that’s something to keep in mind if you aren’t looking to add a new supplement this spring.

“As the weather warms up, it’s natural for us to sweat more. Because of this, [it’s vital to make] sure we’re getting enough electrolytes and B vitamins that can be depleted through excessive sweating,” Hilbert says. “Taking a high-quality B complex can help reduce the loss of these nutrients, and as an added bonus, these B vitamins can also help protect the skin from damaging UV rays.”

If you find that you gravitate toward neutrals, spring is the time to experiment with some neutrals, especially in the shoe department.

After a relatively mild winter, spring appears to be picking up the slack for many parts of the U.S., with some of the most significant winter-like storms marking the beginning of the season. Over the weekend, two combining systems helped generate significant snowfall across parts of the Northeast as they pushed into the area on Saturday.

Northern New England saw more than two feet of flakes in some places, with 28 inches recorded in the town of Albany, New Hampshire, and 27.3 falling in Ludlow, Vermont, Fox Weather reports. Parts of Maine and Upstate New York also recorded just short of two feet.

The storm also brought high winds and torrential rain, drenching the East Coast from Boston to the Washington, D.C. area. As of March 24, roughly 260,000 people were left without power as a result of the weather, The New York Times reported.

But just as the combined storms began pulling out of the Northeast, a new snowy system emerged in another part of the U.S. On March 24, a major blizzard struck parts of the Midwest and Northern Plains States in the beginnings of a multiday push through the area, Fox Weather reports.

The storm developed after colder air from Canada combined with a moisture-heavy front pushing in from the Pacific. It dropped heavy snow on the Rockies before it snarled travel in Minnesota and Nebraska, reducing visibility and causing road closures. It also broke records in Minneapolis, dropping the most snow in the city since Jan. 4 and producing the most single-day accumulation for March since 2008, with 8.2 inches recorded.

And the storm isn’t finished yet: Blizzard warnings are still in effect for through Tuesday across parts of Colorado, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Winter storm warnings are also in effect in Minnesota and northern Wisconsin, while winter weather advisories are in place from northern Texas through the Plains States, Fox Weather reports.

The system is expected to affect a large area, with more than 500,000 square miles forecast to receive at least a few inches of snow before the middle of the week, AccuWeather reports.

Forecasts show that the latest system isn’t done battering the region just yet. By the end of Tuesday, six to 12 inches is expected to accumulate across much of central Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, and central Nebraska, per AccuWeather.

The heaviest-hit regions will likely be in western South Dakota and central northern Minnesota, where 12 to 18 inches could fall. Experts say the late-season push could be the most significant yet this year for some areas that otherwise saw much less of the white stuff than usual.

“This new storm could end up being the biggest single snowfall in the wintertime for parts of the Dakotas and Minnesota,” Brandon Buckingham, a meteorologist with AccuWeather, said during a forecast.

While it’s still expected to see less accumulation overall, the forecast also warned that areas on the fringes of the storm could see wetter, heavier flakes along with strong wind gusts. This could set up some places for power outages as weighed-down tree branches fall.

Even after it stops dropping heavy snow, the system could have a significant impact on weather throughout the week. On Tuesday, it’s expected to produce severe thunderstorms and heavy rain across parts of Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio, with gusts of up to 60 miles per hour and the potential for isolated tornadoes, according to AccuWeather.

The far-reaching system could also bring bad weather to areas much further south. Forecasts say the front could generate severe thunderstorms across the Gulf Coast and inland Alabama, bringing damaging wind gusts up to 65 miles per hour and heavy downpours. By Wednesday evening, this will push farther east to include northern Florida, eastern Georgia, and the southern tip of South Carolina.

On Feb. 12, DIY YouTuber Araceli Chan posted a video to her TikTok account @aracelichandiy encouraging her followers to head to the popular discount chain for their garden needs.

“You guys really have to go and check out Dollar Tree’s planter section,” she said. “Over the years, their planter selection has really expanded.”

Pots can be extremely expensive, but “whether you want something small or a little bit bigger, guaranteed you’re gonna find it here,” Chan added. “And honestly? You can’t really beat $1.25 for something like this.”

Model and influencer Georgia Rose also shared her spring garden haul from Dollar Tree in a Feb. 19 video on her TikTok account @georgiarosecurves. In the video, Rose showed off several seed packets she bought from the retailer, noting that they were just $1 for four packets.

“[The price] is crazy,” she said. “I can’t wait to plant these zinnias, the petunias, and the marigolds.”

Rose wasn’t just interested in the seed packets, however. In her video, she highlighted a product she picked up from Dollar Tree called Flower Rocket.

“I wanted to show you these really cool flower pod packs they had,” she said, showing off four different versions of the product that she purchased: Zinnia Mix, Fragrance Bouquet, Painted Daisy, and Butterfly/Hummingbird.

The boxes for the Flower Rocket pods claim they contain over 500 seeds to produce countless flowers. “I’m curious to see how these are gonna work but basically they have this little like roll of seeds, and you put it in the dirt and seed starter mix and you get flowers,” Rose explained. “I’m really excited to maybe have some fresh flowers in the house this year.”

Protecting your garden is just as important as growing it. But you don’t have to spend hundreds to keep things secure. In a Feb. 26 video, gardener Sheronda took to her TikTok account @iamsheronda to discuss her favorite items at Dollar Tree this year.

While shopping for this spring season, Sheronda stopped by a small section of fencing strips that she said she used last year to make a garden bed. “And it’s still holding up a year later,” she shared.

If you want to protect your knees while you’re bent down working in the weeds, Dollar Tree has what you need. Gardener Kylie posted a video to her TikTok account @kyliesgarden on Feb. 18, telling her followers she was “pleasantly surprised” by the retailer’s gardening supplies.

One of the items she was most excited about was the gardening knee pads. On March 8, a shopper named Amber posted a video to her TikTok @karasumoon showing her gardening favorites from the store. Among her purchases were wastebaskets, which she explains she uses for “ground composting.”

“All my kitchen scraps will get put into it with composting worms to feed my raised beds all year long,” she said.

Even though the calendar says it’s officially spring, many people may not be feeling the changes quite yet. After an unseasonably chilly start to the week for the Southeast, parts of the Midwest are now bracing for a storm that’s expected to bring considerable snowfall.

Colder air pushing down from Canada is combining with moisture from warmer southern air masses to create the system, Fox Weather reports. Snow is expected to start falling in the Rockies and eastern Montana today before pushing east into North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and northern Illinois by tomorrow.

Forecasts predict that cities like Minneapolis, Green Bay, and Milwaukee could be the hardest hit with snow, with five to eight inches of accumulation through Friday. The system is then expected to pass into the Northeast, where it could drop more snow just as the weekend begins.

While the lingering winter conditions might feel harsh now, they’re expected to give way to even more dangerous weather soon.

A long-range forecast says a storm system moving in from the Pacific is expected to make landfall in the U.S. by the weekend when it will drop heavy precipitation on parts of the West Coast, AccuWeather reports. Colder areas to the north might see some snowfall early next week as a result, especially from Colorado through Nebraska and South Dakota to Minnesota.

But as it passes the Rocky Mountains, a jet stream is expected to feed it with moist, warm air from the Gulf of Mexico that will fuel heavy rain and thunderstorms in warmer areas to the south.

According to the forecast, severe storms could begin to develop in Oklahoma and Texas late this weekend. AccuWeather reports that they’re expected to move farther east into the Mississippi Valley and interior Southeast on March 24 and 25. The forecasted area includes Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Missouri, Tennessee, Georgia, and West Virginia.

Data is too far out to pinpoint precisely where the severe weather could hit. However, the outlook does include the potential for heavy rain and flash flooding, large hail, and even tornadoes.

“The orientation of the jet stream and storm track will determine the nature, location, and scope of the severe weather for the first part of next week,” said Paul Pastelok, a long-range meteorologist with AccuWeather.

While severe weather is possible at any time of year, spring also marks the peak of tornado season in parts of the U.S. Conditions begin to ripen in March when warmer, humid air from southern areas smashes up against colder air masses from farther north, The Washington Post reports. The most active months are April through June, mainly affecting the Plains States but also the South and Midwest.

This year, above-average temperatures have brought an earlier start to the season. But while most years see the bulk of earlier tornadoes touch down in the South, 2024 has also seen a fair share hit the Midwest, The Weather Channel reports. According to researchers, warmer temperatures could have helped fuel the many twisters that hit the region—including the first ever to touch down in Wisconsin during February.

Like hurricanes, experts say El Niño conditions that have been in place tend to help decrease the amount of tornado activity, USA Today reports. However, scientists note that since the cycle now appears to be transitioning to La Niña conditions, it might mean that the later part of spring could see more severe weather develop.

“We’re coming off a very strong [El Niño], but we’re forecast to fade out very quickly,” Victor Gensini, PhD, a professor of meteorology at Northern Illinois University, told The Post. “We don’t have a lot of those types of samples, but those that we do have generally support above-average activity. There’s a lot of general variability as to where the highest density of reports is, though.”

Emma Villaneda, the influencer behind The Crafted Studio Co., recommends brightening your doorstep with a colorful new doormat for spring.

To give your table or mantle a soft glow at your next gathering, Snearly recommends picking up a half-dozen of these glass candle holders, which she says have the “weight, style, and look of real crystal.”

“They’re so beautiful for your tea lights,” she says, recommending them for a “wedding, bridal shower, or any event.”

Snearly also bought a range of wooden wall decorations in the shapes of feathers, plants, and butterflies. Covering them with a bit of gold spray paint, she demonstrates in the video how she arranges them in an artful line in a bedroom.

“I am so impressed with all of the wood products in the new section,” she says, remarking on the wide range of styles on offer. “This would look good in your house!”

If you don’t have an outdoor garden, bringing spring indoors with some cut flowers can get you in the seasonal spirit.

Liz Fenwick, a home upgrades influencer who posts to her YouTube channel Liz Fenwick DIY, shared in a recent video that you can pick up glass vases for unbeatable prices at Dollar Tree.
