If you’ve ever marveled at a patch of pretty flowers, there’s a good chance you were gawking at zinnias. The brilliant blossoms are native to Central and South America, and originally became incredibly popular with breeders due to their vibrantly colored flowers, according to American Meadows.

These days, you can get a full spectrum of colors in your yard just by including different variations, many of which include multiple gradients in one bloom, per the Chicago Botanic Garden. You can also select them based on their height, with Zinnia elegans (or the most common planting) growing as tall as 14 inches to dwarf zinnias that are half the height. Keep in mind that those variants with the longer stems make them perfect for vases and a must-have for anyone who likes to decorate their homes with flowers from their own garden.

Zinnias are an annual flower, meaning they won’t grow back from the same roots as previous seasons. However, they’re incredibly efficient at spreading their own seeds—and even getting some in the ground as late as April will all but guarantee flowers by the time summer arrives.

Part of the reason for this is the plant’s incredibly speedy germination time. Zinnias begin germination once soil temperatures reach 60 degrees Fahrenheit, according to Homes & Gardens. If you’re confident your area has its freeze snaps behind it, that tends to set up April as prime time for planting! Once underway, there’s a decent chance you’ll have flowers in eight to 12 weeks.

The best part? Once they’ve grown, these flowers are known as some of the most low-maintenance plants around, thriving in full sunlight with occasional watering, per Homes & Gardens.

Depending on your region and level of enthusiasm, there are a few ways to go about getting that color into your gardens. If you’re more worried about lingering cold snaps or ensuring proper germination and growth, it’s best to plant zinnia seeds in a biodegradable planter and store them in a warm, bright area, such as on a sunny windowsill, according to Homes & Gardens. To avoid disturbing their roots, you can then just transfer the entire planter into the ground when ready to go.

Otherwise, you can also plant seeds right into the ground. Just dig about a quarter of an inch into the dirt and drop in a few seeds, giving each planting about 10 to 12 inches of space. Then, water and wait for the magic to grow!

Dahlias have also earned a reputation among gardeners as a great spring grower. By getting them in the ground now, you should have dazzling blossoms by mid to late summer, according to the National Garden Bureau.

When it comes to spring flowers, everyone’s mind tends to jump to the daffodils and tulips that are among the first bits of color to push their way up through the ground. But if you didn’t get around to planting those bulbs last autumn, hellebores are your last-minute option to bring some early life to your garden as soon as this year.

Also known as the “Lenten rose,” Helleborus orientalis is a hardy perennial originally native to Eurasia, according to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. The species gets its name from its habit of blossoming in early spring, which typically coincides with the Christian observance of the lead-up to Easter.

Even as an import, the Lenten rose is quite adaptable to much of the U.S., suitable for cold climates and performing quite well through Zones 4 and 5. But where this plant really stands out is its ability to perform during the chillier months when most other specimens remain mostly or fully dormant. By late winter and the earliest bits of spring, the plant begins to blossom with impressive flowers, often just before or right around the same time as daffodils, tulips, and other bulbs.

“The cup-shaped blooms come in a wide range of colors, from white to nearly black, and in solid, speckled, and striped patterns,” Janet Loughrey of Garden Design previously told Best Life.

Once they’ve opened, the flowers stay in bloom for a month or more before they dry and are replaced by thick, green foliage. The bonus here is that you can likely expect that color to stick around.

“The foliage remains green year-round except for in colder zones,” Loughrey told Best Life.

In terms of timing, you’re fine to pick up the trowel and start planting hellebores in early spring to take full advantage of those early flowers. Try to pick a spot that receives partial shade (even though places that get full light during the winter when trees shed their leaves are fine, too). Just make sure it’s in a spot that receives direct sunlight for less than half the day during the hot summer months, according to Southern Living.

If you’re bringing multiple plants into your garden, you can also bunch the flowers into groups of up to half a dozen and space each cluster about a foot and a half to two feet apart. Make sure the area has good soil drainage, too!

While they require plenty of water right after being planted, another perk of Helleborus orientalis is that it hardly requires any extra maintenance for the rest of the typical growing season. Of course, this changes during periods of intense heat or drought, so be sure to give them plenty of water when the mercury rises or the weather dries out, per Southern Living.

Of course, hellebores aren’t the only options for spring planting that can get your garden looking lively before the season really kicks off. Flowers like pansies and violas can be planted in the ground by March for colorful flowers, and creeping phlox and bleeding heart can be planted as late as early April, according to Gardenia.net.

Creeping thyme is an excellent grass alternative.

The go-to for ground cover might typically be grass, but gardeners know it’s far from the only option. In a recent post to Instagram, @housekeeping_101 points out that creeping thyme (or wild thyme) can be a fantastic replacement.

According to the author, the sprawling plant (whose scientific name is Thymus serpyllum) can not only add a pop of color to your lawn, but also bring a pleasant fragrance as it blooms throughout most of the year.

Besides not having to bust out that lawnmower nearly as often, there are plenty of good reasons to consider swapping in this sprawling herb for grass. According to The Spruce, creeping thyme is perennial in moderate climates and grows low like a ground vine that removes the requirement for mowing.

And that’s not the only reduction in yardwork: The plant can help choke out weeds and is relatively drought-resistant and deer-resistant. It can also be a solution for some turf where grass struggles, including sandy or gravelly soil.

How to plant creeping thyme:

Ready to replace your lawn? Before you get started, it’s important to note that while Thymus serpyllum is incredibly hardy, it thrives in USDA Zones Four through Nine, according to the Farmer’s Almanac. If you’re going for a large area, keep in mind that you’ll also need at least one plant for every square foot of coverage.

As with many spring plantings, you should wait for the last frost date to pass before getting to work. This time before temperatures rise and the sun becomes warmer will give it time to establish itself in your yard.

Make sure you remove any grasses in the area you’re hoping to cover, loosen the soil, add about an inch layer of compost, and place the plants in a shallow hole before watering thoroughly. From then on, you’ll only have to water them every 10 days or so amid normal weather conditions, per The Spruce.

Not ready to get rid of all of your grass just yet? Creeping thyme is also the perfect add-on to rockier areas where other plants struggle, and can be a great way to line your garden paths with pops of color.

A few limitations to keep in mind.

Gardeners love thyme for its ability to take in full sun and survive most conditions. However, it’s important to note that high humidity or poor drainage are two things the plant can’t stand, according to Farmer’s Almanac.

Impatient planters should also beware. While Thymus serpyllum will fill out ground area over time, it may take a season or two for them to really hit their stride and growing potential.

And if you’re the type who needs to “touch grass” regularly during the warmer months, you might also want to take note: While creeping thyme can take the occasional footprint, it won’t last in heavy traffic areas.

The first is a photo of the Crab Nebula, which utilizes the instrument’s infrared capturing technology, revealing new intricate details not visible to the unaided eye. The release is classified as Priority Mail Flat-Rate Envelope postage and will sell for $11.95 each.

The second is a stunning picture called Galaxy Pair, featuring galaxies named IC 2163 and NGC 2207. It’s a composite of images of ultraviolet and visible light also taken by the Hubble Telescope, providing intense detail and offering valuable insights into “the nature of galactic evolution, star formation, and the fundamental forces shaping the cosmos,” per the USPS press release. This release is classified as a Priority Mail Express Flat-Rate Envelope stamp, which sells for $33.25 each.

Ready to hit the road? On May 5, the USPS is releasing a set of stamps commemorating the nation’s most iconic roadway, Route 66. There are eight different versions in total, with each featuring a different picture from each of the states the route passes through, shot by photographer David J. Schwartz. The set is classified and priced as Forever basic postage.

The United States is gearing up to celebrate its 250th birthday this year, and the USPS is stepping up with its own celebration. On April 10th, the agency will release its Figures of the American Revolution set, according to a press release.

The impressive set showcases 25 different historic figures who played a significant role in our nation’s battle for independence from Great Britain. From the Founding Fathers to instrumental women, Black, and Native American icons, the images were all created by more than a dozen artists. Now that spring has finally arrived, it’s time to get into the season. That’s why, last week, the USPS released its brand-new Sunflowers stamp, according to a press release.

The latest piece of postage celebrates those iconic, massive flowers that are synonymous with the warmer months of the year. Illustrator Nancy Stahl drew the image as ink sketches based on photographs. This also marks the first time the flowers have appeared on stamps since they were last used in 2008 and 2012. They’re sold as First-Class Mail 1-ounce rate in booklets of 20.

No matter how you look at it, it’s been a big year for BJ’s. The warehouse retailer posted impressive numbers to close out its fiscal year, driven in part by the opening of 14 new stores in 2025, The Wall Street Journal reports. But despite some concerns of ballooning expenses, the store says it is still on track to cut the ribbon on 30 new locations by the end of 2026.

“As we look out at the new club pipeline, we would expect this pace of openings to continue over the coming years,” BJ’s CEO Bob Eddy said during a recent earnings call with analysts.

Despite an unexpected controversy at the hands of a Sydney Sweeney ad campaign last year, American Eagle appears to be soaring high—at least when it comes to its offshoot brands, Aerie and Offline. In a recent earnings call, corporate leadership said it had plans to open between 35 and 40 new locations of the two stores, Chain Store Age reports.

“We enter 2026 from a position of strength with the goal of building on this year’s successes,” American Eagle CEO Jay Schottenstein said during the call. “The first quarter is off to a positive start, and we remain focused on investing in our brands and driving additional corporate savings and efficiency across the business.”

However, not everything within the company is ascendant: At the same time, the company said it planned to shutter 25 to 30 slower-performing American Eagle locations, per Chain Store Age.

Sure, Ross might be about dressing for less, but this year it appears the retailer is all about more—at least when it comes to locations. The retailer kicked off 2026 with a hot streak, opening 13 stores (as well as four of its offshoot DD’s) across 11 states. And that’s just the start: The company says this puts it on pace to open the 85 new Ross locations it had planned by the end of the year.

Fans of Princess Polly, prepare to celebrate: The uber-popular Australian-founded clothing retailer is pushing further into the U.S. market. Executives with the company recently announced they had signed leases for eight new locations stateside, including the first stores that will open in Texas and Minnesota, Chain Store Age reports. The expansion will bring the total U.S. store count to 21.

Stores expected to open in the second half of this year include the Galleria in Houston, Texas; Stonebriar Centre in Frisco, Texas; the Mall at Millenia in Orlando, Florida; and Southdale Center in Edina, Minnesota. The first half of next year will see new locations in Jacksonville, Florida; the Mall at Green Hills in Nashville, Tennessee; St. Johns Town Center in Boca Raton, Florida; and the SouthPark Mall in Charlotte, North Carolina.

With roughly 21,000 locations across the U.S., there’s a decent chance you already have a Dollar General location (or one of its sister brands, such as DGX, DG Market, or pOpshelf) in your area. But in an earnings call at the end of last year, the company’s top brass said it was focusing its latest wave of store openings in sparsely populated areas around the country, Retail Touch Points reports.

“Looking ahead to 2026, we are uniquely positioned to serve an underserved customer in rural America, where approximately 80 percent of our current store base serves towns of 20,000 or fewer people,” Todd Vasos, CEO and director of Dollar General, said during a call discussing the company’s most recent quarterly financial results on Dec. 4.

Despite citing the types of areas they were targeting, the company didn’t specify exactly where new locations would be opening. However, they did say they planned to have all 450 of the new stores up and running by January 2027.

Get ready for more affordable grocery options! In a Jan. 12 press release, Aldi said it was hitting the gas on its U.S. expansion plans. The company says it will cut the ribbon on 180 new locations before the end of 2026, bringing the chain to a total of 2,800 stores nationwide.

While an exact list of new stores wasn’t specified, the company did outline a few notable regions they’d be focusing on. They include Maine, marking its first location in the state; Colorado, with plans to open more than 50 stores there by 2028; Phoenix, which will see 10 new stores this year; and Las Vegas.

The chain also said it would continue expansion in the Southeast following its acquisition of Southeastern Grocers two years ago, citing plans to convert more than 200 locations to Aldi stores by the end of next year.

Aldi also said it planned to grow beyond this year, aiming to bring its total domestic store count to more than 3,200 by the end of 2028.

Sometimes, one retailer’s loss can be another’s gain. At least that was the case for discount retailer Big Lots, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year. But instead of the former stores sitting vacant (or becoming a Spirit Halloween store), Ollie’s Bargain Outlet seized the moment and took over 63 of the locations to make their own.

“Everything about these stores lines up well with our business and growth strategy,” Eric van der Valk, CEO of Ollie’s, said in a press release last year. “These locations are the right size, come with favorable lease terms, are located in existing and adjacent trade areas, and have long serviced value conscious consumers.”

Out of all the brick-and-mortar businesses out there, bookstores have long felt like one of the most vulnerable to technology and changes in shopping. Even industry icon Barnes & Noble was facing a grim reality at the end of the last decade after reporting a $125.5 million loss in 2019, per Forbes. But under the tutelage of CEO James Daunt, the store now appears to have turned the page on many of its problems—and is continuing to expand.

After opening more than 60 stores in 2025, the company has plans to open just as many this year, per Forbes. Management has found success in leaning into the personal experience behind picking up a hard copy, including letting local stores choose their layouts and inventory in the same style as independent bookstores.

While it might be tough for traditional department stores out there right now (just ask Macy’s), the same can’t be said for some of their discount offshoots like Nordstrom Rack. The retailer says it will open at least 23 stores across 15 states this year, and has plans to open even more in the near future, Chain Store Age reports.

Over the last decade, UNIQLO has become a go-to for reliably affordable fashion in the market. But apparently, the company isn’t done growing yet: In a Jan. 22 press release, the retailer announced it would be opening 15 new stores in 2026. This includes new flagship stores in Chicago and San Francisco, four new stores in New York City, and the first locations for Austin and Miami.

On top of typical services, some of the new stores will feature the UTme! customizable t-shirt and tote bag service, as well as RE.UNIQLO Studio, which offers repairs and embroidery services.

As if Costco fans needed another reason to swing by their local warehouse, it now appears there will be more locations to choose from. The wholesale retailer that it plans to expand its footprint with a net of 28 new stores by the end of this fiscal year, Chain Store Age reports. In the “coming years,” it also expects to open roughly 30 warehouses or more annually, adding to the 924 stores it currently operates globally and 634 across the U.S.

A lunar eclipse will turn the moon red tonight.

In the early morning hours of March 3, 2026, U.S. residents can witness a very unique spectacle when our closest orbiting body will change color. The natural phenomenon occurs as part of a full lunar eclipse, which is when the Earth passes between the sun and the moon (during a full phase) and casts its shadow upon the lunar surface, according to NASA.

While eclipses do darken the moon, they can also cause a unique color-changing effect that results in a “blood moon.” This dramatic shift from brilliant white to dark red and burnt orange is the result of partial light reaching the moon’s surface after passing through the Earth’s atmosphere.

Quite beautifully, NASA refers to this situation: “As if all of the world’s sunrises and sunsets are projected onto the moon” to be shared by millions of people back on Earth at the same time.

While total solar eclipses are exceedingly rare and are only visible in most areas once every 375 years, lunar eclipses are relatively more common and occur about once every 2.5 years, The Washington Post reports.  However, the timing of tonight’s event lines up well for viewers within North America, Central America, Australia, and Asia, making it a spectacle available to millions around the globe.

When does the blood moon lunar eclipse start?

Depending on where you live, you may have to stay up well past your bedtime (or wake up well before your alarm) to get the full “blood moon” experience.

According to NASA, the penumbral eclipse kicks off at 3:44 a.m. EST (or 12:44 a.m. PST), which is when the moon will begin to dim. A little over an hour later at 4:40 a.m. EST (1:50 a.m. PST), the partial eclipse will start, bringing a dark shadow to the moon’s surface.

Totality will finally kick off 6:04 a.m. EST (3:04 a.m PST), when the moon is entirely in the Earth’s umbra (or shadow). By now, it will appear as a stunning dark red or orange hue in the night sky for 58 minutes until totality ends at 7:03 a.m. EST (4:03 a.m. PST) and the process begins again in reverse, according to NASA. The eclipse will officially end at 9:23 a.m. EST (6:23 a.m. PST).

Those on the East Coast will be in the strange position of watching totality occur as the moon slips below the horizon at sunrise around 7 a.m. However, this will also create a rare event known as selenelion, where both the rising sun and the blood red full moon will be visible at the same time.

If you don’t want to miss this unique sight, try to find a high-up location with a very clear view of the eastern and western horizons.

What do I need to watch the blood moon lunar eclipse?

Unlike a total solar eclipse, which requires special protective glasses to avoid damaging the eyes, all you need to see a lunar eclipse is the right timing and clear local weather conditions to view it.

Of course, the moon will be just as large and visible as it normally is in the night sky, meaning you won’t need any instruments or aids to see things clearly. However, grabbing a decent pair of binoculars or setting up a telescope can also get you an even better view.

As with any astronomical event, it’s best to be away from cities and other sources of light pollution to get the best effect. Just be sure to keep those chilly nighttime March temperatures in mind and dress warmly (and maybe bring along a thick blanket) when you’re planning your outside time.

The USPS has never been one to shy away from celebrating natural grandeur and idyllic scenery with its releases. This year, the mail service is commemorating the 150th anniversary of Colorado statehood by issuing a new stamp.

According to a press release, the latest issue features a snapshot of a cloud-hugged mountain beside a pristine lake taken by nature photographer John Fiedler.

Going low and slow is a hallmark of Mexican American and Chicano communities throughout the American Southwest. And this month, the USPS is celebrating this important part of national heritage with a new set of five different stamps featuring iconic lowrider vehicle styles throughout the decades.

The model selections include a blue 1958 Chevrolet Impala named “Eight Figures”; a red 1963 Chevrolet Impala named “El Rey”; and an orange 1964 Chevrolet Impala named “The Golden Rose,” as photographed by Humberto “Beto” Mendoza. There’s also a green 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme named “Pocket Change” and a blue 1946 Chevrolet Fleetline named “Let the Good Times Roll/Soy Como Soy” taken from photos by Philip Gordon.

With Black History Month underway, the USPS is also commemorating iconic quiltmaker Harriet Powers with a quartet of new stamps. Born on a plantation in Georgia in 1837 into enslavement, she was able to learn to sew as a young girl and eventually completed five quilt pieces throughout her life that use embroidery as a medium for storytelling.

The latest set of stamps features four different panels that were part of Powers’s “Pictorial Quilt.” Completed in 1898, the full piece was originally commissioned by Atlanta University faculty wives as a gift for the school’s university board vice president, Charles Cuthbert Hall. Another one of Powers’s works, known as the “Bible Quilt,” currently hangs in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

Everyone loves receiving a good birthday card. But what if the celebration started before you even opened the envelope? For the first time since 2021, the USPS issued a brand new Happy Birthday stamp, which will add a little something special to your thoughtful message.

“I am excited that we are issuing new Happy Birthday stamps,” Lisa Bobb-Semple, USPS stamp services director, said in a press release.” Many customers have submitted ideas for occasion-specific stamps such as these, and we are pleased to be able to fulfill this request from the public.”

The Summer Sunset stamp was commissioned for bulk mailings by authorized nonprofit organizations, meaning they’ll likely be attached to charity or foundation notifications you receive.

The image itself features a painting of a sunset over the shoreline of Chillmark, which is a small village on the island of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. The work was completed by local island artist Rachael Cassiani.

For 31 years, the Labrador Retriever was rated the most popular dog breed in the U.S. by the American Kennel Club (AKC), and for the past three years, it’s come in at number-two. In large part, this is due to how family-friendly these dogs are.

“These dogs are very playful and easy to train. They can be very active to run around all day with kids or curl up on the couch and watch a baby sleep,” says veterinarian Sara Ochoa, a veterinary consultant for DogLab.

To this point, the AKC gives Labs the highest marks for how affectionate they are with families and how good they are with both children and other dogs. They’re also highly adaptable and friendly towards new people.

Next to Labs, Goldens are probably the breed that most often comes to mind when thinking about family dogs. They receive similarly high marks from the AKC regarding affection and getting along with kids and other dogs, and they’re also easy to train.

“These friendly, super loyal dogs have high levels of emotional intelligence [and] have that unwavering need for loyalty and companionship,” Adam Christman, DVM, chief veterinary officer for dvm360, shared in a TikTok video.

However, like Labradors, Golden Retrievers are very active, so you’ll need to have the space and time to help them get their energy out.

If you want a larger, more energetic family-friendly dog that isn’t a Lab or a Golden Retriever, consider a Vizsla. According to veterinarian Shelly Zacharias, vice president of medical affairs for Gallant, this is “an active, sporty breed who is sensitive, affectionate, and level-headed.”

“When ‘working,’ the Vizsla is all business, but when it’s family time, not many breeds compare to the devoted, loving nature of this intelligent breed,” she adds.

Consider this breed if you’re looking for a running or biking companion, as they are “eager and graceful trotters of great stamina,” as the AKC notes.

For families who live in an apartment or small home, the pug is the perfect petite pet.

“Pugs enjoy short walks, indoor activities, and lounging at home,” Teresa Manucy, a veterinarian at Chewy, previously told Best Life. “They are an ideal breed for apartments as they often have laid-back, loyal personalities and are happy to hang out and cuddle with their people.”

However, do note that Pugs’ flat faces, while adorable, group them as a brachycephalic breed. This makes them prone to breathing problems, especially in hot weather.

While pugs prefer to snooze and cuddle, Rachel Barrack, founder of concierge practice Animal Acupuncture, notes that French Bulldogs have “tons of energy for kids who like to chase and roughhouse with their dogs.”

She also says they’re great with other animals, “so if you are [thinking about] adding a pup to your family and you already have one pet, consider a Bulldog!” In fact, Frenchies are the breed that overtook Labs as the most popular in recent years!

This is another brachycephalic breed, though, so consider the health implications.

Thanks to their well-mannered personalities and tuxedo-like markings, this breed has earned the nickname the “American gentleman.”

“Boston Terriers are small, sweet, and lively with very good temperaments,” explains Zacharias. “While they are very playful, they are also gentle and affectionate dogs. These personality traits make them ideal family dogs for young families.”

This is also a very low-maintenance breed, as they don’t shed or drool much.

Beagles are “cute, loyal, friendly, fun, lovable, active, and intensely devoted,” says Zacharias. “They are happy to sit on the couch with you, go on hikes, or play with the kids.”

Because of their adaptability and even temperament, Beagles are also considered a great breed if a member of your family is a senior.

Don’t let the giant size of the Newfoundland fool you. According to Barrack, this dog is “sweet, patient, and loyal,” making it one of the best family dogs. She notes that “they also have a watchful nature that will look out and protect your children.”

Sally Grottini, certified trainer of service and therapy dogs and the dog behavior specialist at JustAnswer, previously shared with Best Life that Newfoundlands are one of her favorite dog breeds for families with kids.

“They have a goofy personality and love attention from their family. But once playtime is over, they are big nappers, giving everyone in the home a rest,” she said. “They love to be petted and often enjoy a hug.”

“They are famously good family dogs: sweet-tempered companions for the folks, and rollicking playmates and tennis-ball fetchers for the children,” the AKC says of the Irish Setter.

Barrack adds that this breed is intelligent and easily trainable. But she notes that they get very lonely when their family is not around,” so if you plan on being out for most of the day, this probably isn’t the dog for you.

Who doesn’t love a Poodle? As Zacharias explains, these dogs are “extremely intelligent” with “non-shedding, hypoallergenic coats.” They are also great with children and super affectionate with their families.

Poodles are considered among the easiest dogs to train, so if your family is tight on time, this could be a good choice. The best part? This breed comes in standard, miniature, and toy sizes, so whether you want a big or small dog, the Poodle is still right for you.

1. The Northeast

Out of all the parts of the country, New England and the surrounding states have had a particularly rough go of it when it comes to chilly conditions from as far back as mid-autumn. But if you’re eager for a big warm-up in the area, you’ll likely be in luck.

According to the Farmer’s Almanac long-term forecast, the Northeast can expect above-average temperatures, likely pushing 3 degrees above historic averages. And while the mercury isn’t expected to rise until slightly later in the season in May, March and April are expected to see less precipitation than usual—including no significant snowfall.

2. The Mid-Atlantic

Further to the south, things will also be warming up. Temperatures in areas along the Eastern Seaboard through Richmond, Virginia, are also expected to be about 3 degrees Fahrenheit above average by May. This will also likely be accompanied by a normal amount of rainfall, per the Farmer’s Almanac.

3. The Southeast

Even though it’s typically relatively immune to frigid weather, this region has still seen some seriously chilly conditions in recent weeks, including record-low freezing temperatures in Florida. However, things are expected to bounce back in the coming weeks.

According to the long-term outlook, the southern part of the Eastern Seaboard (including North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia) will be warmer than usual throughout the spring. But while the area can expect a slightly less rainy April, there could be more precipitation than normal in May.

Meanwhile, Florida is also expected to see a slightly warmer April than it’s used to, before temperatures return to average the following month. It could also be slightly drier in the earlier part of spring.

4. The Midwest and Great Lakes

After months of brutal snow and persistently frigid conditions, much of the Midwest will get a bit of a rebound this spring. Places like Michigan and the states surrounding the Great Lakes will be slightly warmer than average, according to the Farmer’s Almanac’s outlook.

The Upper Midwest will be split, however, with western areas expected to see above-average temperatures and rain. The eastern part of the region will be slightly cooler and rainier than usual, though.

5. The Plains and Heartland

The very center of the U.S. is another area expected to see balmier spring temperatures than they’re used to. The outlook predicts that April could see conditions 5 degrees above historical averages in places like Iowa, Missouri, eastern Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas. However, there will be a split on rain, with northern areas seeing less than usual and southern areas getting a little wetter than average

However, things may cool off slightly for the southern states like Oklahoma and Texas once May rolls around. The outlook expected those places to be 1 to 2 degrees below average that month.

6. The Southwest

If you live in the desert areas of Arizona, New Mexico, and California, you might want to prepare for a slightly warmer season ahead. The outlook expects the region to see above-average temperatures beginning in May, along with an increase in rain in the eastern parts of the area.

7. The Pacific Coast

Anyone who lives in Washington, Oregon, or California could have a warmer spring in store for themselves. From the top of Washington down to Northern California, temperatures are expected to be above-average for April before cooling off to below-average the following month. On the other hand, the southern part of the coast will see the warmer readings carry through for May.

Major storms played a factor in lawn damage.

One of the most obvious culprits is the major snowstorm that blasted a huge swath of the country in late January, with snow and freezing rain knocking out power for tens of millions. The storm is believed to have caused upwards of $6.7 billion in privately insured losses, Reuters reported. In total, claims were filed across 30 states, ranging from New Mexico through the Northeast.

However, some of the damage may only become apparent as lawns across the U.S. emerge from hibernation. Issues like snow mold, suffocation, and trampling can damage and kill grass, according to The Spruce. And of course, heavy snow and freezing rain can settle on the branches of shrubs and trees, weighing them down and causing them to break or fall.

Weather pattern changes can also damage your lawn.

While much of the U.S. has seen sustained cold temperatures, other regions have seen quick warm spells breaking up the frigid weather. This has been especially true in places like the Southeast and in Florida, where record-cold temperatures brought some areas below freezing.

While it’s nice to have some breaks from the cold, it can also wreak havoc on your lawn. Experts warn that issues like frost and extended cold can create major issues.

“Repeated freezing and thawing can damage grass at a cellular level, while cold temperatures limit water absorption by the roots, leading to dehydration,” Tom Clamp, head of technical at lawncare company Pelsis Doff, recently told Tom’s Guide.

There are also other conditions: “Winter winds can dry out grass further, and cold weather also reduces the nutrients available in the soil,” Clamp explained.

Unfortunately, there’s already evidence that people will have to deal with the fallout in the spring. In December, experts in the Dallas-Fort Worth area warned that this was already a reported issue in Texas this year due to fluctuating temperatures.

As the snow recedes and your lawn becomes active again, you might notice dead patches as a result of the strain winter put on it.

According to the Iowa State University Extension, it’s best to reseed any bare patches in early spring once temperatures are consistently above 45 degrees Fahrenheit. You can also start applying about 1 inch of water over the course of a week to try and spur regrowth.

Rodents can also be an issue.

That fresh snowfall might look nice on your lawn, but beneath the surface, some unwanted visitors could be damaging it.

According to the University of Illinois Extension, vole damage is common during winter months, as snow cover protects them from predators. The burrowing rodents make pathways beneath the snow while they feed on grass blades and their roots.

This tends to result in winding paths and lines of dead grass through your lawn. And while there’s very little you can do to remove snow from covering your grass, the Extension suggests reseeding any vole-damaged areas that don’t sufficiently grow back.

1. The South

It may not come as too much of a surprise, but given expected upcoming changes in weather patterns, many states in the lower latitudes are expected to be some of the first to get that refreshing taste of spring.

According to the latest long-range forecast from AccuWeather, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and all of Texas are slated to see a “faster” transition into the next season from February to March. While that initial return to warmth might feel nice, meteorologists also warn that this could create some problematic conditions.

“You go back to last year, it was pretty warm,” AccuWeather long-range expert Paul Pastelok said. “In fact, we had the second-warmest spring on record last year. This area of the country again could feel early heat.”

2. The Southwest

Other states along the Sun Belt can also expect a relatively quick departure for winter. Places like southern Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and southern Nevada are all expected to see a “faster” transition to spring, according to AccuWeather.

However, there’s an important caveat with this bit of good news. Meteorologists cautioned that the upcoming rise in temperatures is also expected to bring drier conditions to the area, which could worsen an ongoing drought there.

“We are not expecting significant rainfall for this region. Spotty large fires can break out across this region during the spring,” Pastelok warned in his forecast.

3. Southern California

After a mild winter filled with some intense rainfall, the Golden State appears to be heading towards spring. The southern two-thirds of California (beginning inland from the Bay Area and stretching south through Los Angeles and San Diego) is also expected to see a “faster” transition to spring, per the AccuWeather forecast. Still, drier conditions could remain an issue here.

And the northern states will likely have to wait.

If you live in the higher latitudes and you’ve been reading through this hoping for some good news, this is not your lucky day. The northern half of the U.S. (including the Great Lakes region and Midwest) won’t see any sustained changes to the weather anytime soon.

“A slower transition to persistent spring warmth can occur from the northern Rockies to the Northeast,” said Pastelok. He explained that while there may be occasional spurts of slightly warmer weather, they will still be cut down by returning cold blasts, likely until May. Ouch!
