For many women in menopause, weight gain becomes more stubborn as hormonal shifts slow metabolism and redistribute fat. Yet new research suggests that one therapeutic approach—combining tirzepatide, the weight-loss medication sold as Zepbound and Mounjaro, with menopause hormone therapy—may offer a meaningful edge.

RELATED: Weight-Loss Drugs Could Reduce Risk of Death by 50%—But Not Ozempic.

In a January 2026 study published in The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women’s Health, researchers analyzed the health data of postmenopausal women who were categorized as either overweight or obese and were treated with tirzepatide for at least 12 months.

Tirzepatide is currently the most effective FDA-approved medication for obesity, but its effects on postmenopausal women—and more specifically, those taking hormone therapy—have so far been limited.

The study included 120 postmenopausal women, 40 of whom were also using systemic hormone therapy. To ensure a fair comparison, each hormone therapy user was matched to two non-users based on “age, BMI, age at and type of menopause, previous obesity medication use, and diabetes status,” the study states.

Researchers then tracked weight changes and cardiometabolic markers over time using electronic health records provided by Mayo Clinic Health System.

The team ultimately found that combining hormone therapy with tirzepatide yields significantly greater weight loss than either approach used alone.

At their last follow-up visit, women using both tirzepatide and hormone therapy lost an average of 19.2 percent of their total body weight, compared with 14.0 percent among those using only tirzepatide. Women on hormone therapy were also more likely to achieve clinically meaningful milestones, with some participants losing up to 30 percent of their total body weight.

Even more encouraging, the benefits weren’t limited to the scale. Both groups showed improvements in blood sugar control, blood pressure, and liver enzyme levels, reflecting better overall metabolic health. However, the hormone therapy group experienced additional gains, including greater reductions in diastolic blood pressure, triglyceride levels, and markers of liver health.

As Harvard Health Publishing writes, these improved cardiometabolic metrics translate into lower risk of heart attack or stroke—both leading causes of death among both women and men in the U.S. They note that just 6.8 percent of the American population is in prime cardiometabolic health, and that excess body weight and high blood sugar are the two most common reasons we fall short.

While the findings are promising, the researchers caution that this was an observational study, not a randomized controlled trial—meaning it can show associations, but not prove cause and effect. Larger, prospective trials will be needed to confirm whether hormone therapy directly enhances tirzepatide’s weight-loss effects and to clarify the biological mechanisms involved.

Still, for postmenopausal women struggling with obesity, the results highlight an important possibility: addressing hormonal changes alongside modern weight-loss medications may lead to better, more comprehensive outcomes.

The post 10 Simple Ways to Stop “Food Noise” Without Taking Weight-Loss Drugs appeared first on Best Life.

]]>
When Ozempic and similar GLP-1 drugs were released, researchers were surprised to learn of an unexpected weight loss benefit. These medications reduce appetite and slow stomach emptying by regulating hunger hormones and insulin levels, and they also affect the brain by helping to stop “food noise.”

“‘Food noise’ is the term that has been applied to intrusive thoughts about food, whether they be regarding cravings, guilt from eating, or obsessing over what and when to eat,” explains Trista Best, RD, LD, a registered dietitian at The Candida Diet.

However, if you don’t want to turn to a drug like Wegovy or Ozempic, your strategy should address both dietary changes and psychological factors leading you to fixate on food, experts say. Read on to learn the 10 simplest ways to stop food noise without taking weight loss drugs.

RELATED: 5 Antioxidant-Rich Foods Doctors Say May Mimic Ozempic’s Weight Loss Effects.

1. Limit processed food.

Eating lots of processed foods can increase food cue reactivity, making it harder to resist cravings for unhealthy ingredients.

“Processed foods are high in sugar, fat, and salt, which can overstimulate the brain and lead to more frequent food thoughts. Replace these foods with whole-food options like nuts, raw veggies, and fresh fruit,” advises Best.

2. Add more protein and fiber to every meal.

Michelle Routhenstein, RD, a preventive cardiology dietitian and certified diabetes educator at Entirely Nourished, says that filling your plate with protein and fiber can help reduce food noise by cutting cravings.

“Protein and fiber are essential macronutrients that help promote fullness and stabilize blood sugar levels,” Routhenstein tells Best Life. “They slow digestion, which keeps you feeling satisfied longer and helps quiet the food noise.”

“Opt for lean protein sources, such as chicken, fish, and legumes, paired with fiber-rich foods like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains to enhance satiety and curb cravings,” she says.

RELATED: 9 High-Fiber Foods for Weight Loss That Will Keep You Full and Satisfied.

3. Stay hydrated and eat water-rich foods.

The foods you eat can certainly influence food noise—but so can your hydration habits.

“Thirst associated with dehydration can mimic hunger, which intensifies food noise,” explains Best. “Prevent dehydration by consistently drinking water during the day, eating hydrating foods like watermelon and cucumber, and drinking infused water or teas if plain water is unappealing.”

Routhenstein adds that water-rich vegetables like zucchini, cauliflower, spinach, and bell peppers are low in calories but high in water content, helping you feel full without overloading on calories. “Bulk up your meals with these veggies to make them more satisfying and prevent overeating,” she suggests.

4. Prioritize sleep for better hunger regulation.

Your sleep habits can also affect the intensity of food noise and how you react to it.

“Sleep is critical for maintaining a healthy balance of hunger-regulating hormones,” explains Routhenstein. “When you’re not getting enough sleep, your body produces more ghrelin (the hunger-stimulating hormone) and less leptin (which signals fullness), leading to increased cravings and more frequent food noise.”

She recommends aiming for seven to eight hours of quality sleep each night to help restore hormonal balance and reduce excessive hunger and cravings.

RELATED: 7 Healthy Fats to Eat for Weight Loss, Dietitians Say.

5. Practice mindful eating.

Food noise is partly physiological and partly psychological. By practicing mindful eating, you may be able to relieve some of your preoccupation with when and what you’ll eat next.

“By slowing down and paying full attention to your food, you can tune into your body’s true hunger and fullness cues, which helps reduce the constant chatter of cravings,” says Katherine Metzelaar, RDN, a dietitian and the owner of Bravespace Nutrition. “Mindfulness helps you focus on the experience of eating—not just the food itself—but also how it makes you feel, creating a deeper connection to your body and its needs.”

6. Stop labeling foods as “good” or “bad.”

As part of your mindful eating practice, it’s a good idea to try reframing your relationship with food.

“Shift away from seeing food as a source of guilt or restriction,” suggests Metzelaar. “Instead, view it as nourishment and something that supports your well-being. When we stop labeling foods as ‘good’ or ‘bad,’ the constant noise around food choices quiets, and we can start making decisions that feel more balanced and aligned with our body’s needs.”

7. Snack strategically.

You might think the best way to quiet cravings is to ignore them entirely, but a better approach is to snack strategically.

“If you’re feeling hungry, address those cues rather than ignoring them, especially before meals,” Routhenstein advises. “When blood sugar dips, cravings for quick, sugary fixes can intensify. A well-balanced snack—like a handful of nuts paired with fruit—can help prevent these intense cravings by providing both protein and fiber, keeping your hunger in check and reducing the ‘food noise.'”

RELATED: 10 Best Ways to Strip Away Your Unhealthiest Belly Fat, According to Doctors.

8. Eat a balanced diet.

Eating a full and nutrient-dense diet can also help prevent cravings that result from a lack of nutrition.

“Not getting enough food or food groups can lead to increased cravings and food noise,” says Metzelaar. “Eating balanced meals with a variety of foods can help keep food noise in check. Sometimes, food noise is just a signal that your body needs fuel, so staying on top of consistent eating can reduce the intensity of that noise.”

9. Address emotional hunger.

Much of the time, compulsive eating has little to do with food itself and more to do with our emotional state. Getting to the root of those emotions and resolving them by other means can help quiet the noise.

“Food noise often amplifies when we eat for emotional reasons rather than physical hunger,” explains Metzelaar. “Finding non-food-related ways to address emotions—like journaling, deep breathing, or calling a friend—can reduce the urge to overeat or turn to food for comfort.”

10. Create a supportive environment.

Finally, if you struggle with compulsive eating due to food noise, there’s no shame in asking for help. In fact, building a judgment-free network of support could very well be the key to establishing healthy new habits.

“This might mean unfollowing accounts that promote diet culture or harmful body image messages or leaning into supportive communities that emphasize body appreciation and intuitive eating,” notes Metzelaar. “The more you can shift away from external pressures, the more you’ll feel empowered to listen to your body instead of the noise.”

The post 6 Ways the New Wegovy Pill Compares to the Shot for Weight Loss appeared first on Best Life.

]]>
Offering a painless alternative to weekly GLP-1 shots, the new Wegovy pill is poised to shake up the weight-loss landscape by delivering results—needle-free. Made by Novo Nordisk, the once-daily oral medication won FDA approval in December 2025 and is, as of this week, now rolling out to consumers nationwide.

Clinical trials suggest the pill produces results on par with those of injections: Participants with obesity or overweight who took it for the full study period lost an average of about 17 percent of their body weight. Still, many people are wondering how the pill really stacks up against the shot—and what those differences might mean for day-to-day use. These are the six things you need to know about how the new Wegovy pill compares to the Wegovy shot.

RELATED: Is Retatrutide Poised to Overtake Ozempic as the Hottest Weight-Loss Drug?

The pill and injection are absorbed by the body differently.

Oral Wegovy and injectable Wegovy both contain semaglutide, but they enter the body in very different ways. The injection delivers the drug straight under the skin, where it’s absorbed relatively efficiently into the bloodstream and can act steadily over many days.

The pill, on the other hand, has to survive digestion and be absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract, which results in much lower and more variable bioavailability.

The pill has timing requirements, while the injection does not.

Because of this difference in delivery, the Wegovy pill must be taken under specific timing conditions in order for the body to absorb enough of the medication.

According to GoodRx, those prescribed the medication in pill form should take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a small amount of water, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other medicines.

These strict instructions help maximize absorption because the pill’s active ingredient, semaglutide, is poorly absorbed through the gut without these measures.

In contrast, the weekly injection form of Wegovy doesn’t have these timing requirements—you can inject it at any time of day and eat and drink normally before or after, because the medication goes directly into the bloodstream.

The pill is taken daily, while the injection is typically performed weekly.

Another clear distinction between the two formulations is dosing frequency: The Wegovy pill is taken once a day in order to maintain steady levels of the drug in the bloodstream.

Meanwhile, the injectable Wegovy is administered once a week, thanks to its longer-lasting presence in the body after subcutaneous injection and more reliable absorption into circulation.

RELATED: Doctors Warn That Drugs Like Ozempic Are Making You “Skinny Fat.”

The pill and injection have different storage requirements.

The two forms of Wegovy also differ in how they must be stored before use. Because the injectable semaglutide is a biologic medication sensitive to temperature, it’s typically kept in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use it, though it can remain at room temperature for a limited time once in use.

The pill form, like most tablets, generally does not require refrigeration and can be stored at room temperature in a dry place. Some users find this more convenient, especially for travel.

The pill may come with more side effects than the injection.

Consumers may also experience differences in side effects, depending on how their medication is administered. Seth Kipnis, MD, medical director of bariatric and robotic surgery at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center, writes that the Wegovy pill may come with a greater frequency of side effects, including “more frequent gastrointestinal events” such as higher rates of nausea and vomiting.

The pill may be unsuitable for those who are breastfeeding.

No form of Wegovy is safe to use if you are pregnant or planning on soon becoming pregnant. “Wegovy may harm your unborn baby. You should stop using Wegovy two months before you plan to become pregnant,” the drugmakers write.

However, advice on taking the medication while breastfeeding appears a little more nuanced. Those who are breastfeeding may be able to take the Wegovy shot, though Novo Nordisk acknowledges that “it is not known if Wegovy, when received through an injection, passes into your breast milk.”

Breastfeeding individuals should not take Wegovy tablets, since the pill contains an absorption enhancer, which is known to affect breastmilk.

6 Supplements to Avoid If You’re Taking a GLP-1 Medication, Doctors Say https://bestlifeonline.com/supplements-to-avoid-with-glp-1-medications/ Thu, 05 Feb 2026 12:30:46 +0000 https://bestlifeonline.com/?p=599315 Deciding to take a GLP-1 weight-loss medication such as Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro is no...

The post 6 Supplements to Avoid If You’re Taking a GLP-1 Medication, Doctors Say appeared first on Best Life.

]]>
Deciding to take a GLP-1 weight-loss medication such as Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro is no small commitment. Though the newest class of weight loss injections is known to be uniquely effective in helping people regulate blood sugar and shed excess pounds, they also have the potential to cause serious side effects in some patients.

To make matters worse, taking weight-loss drugs alongside certain supplements can cause interactions or trigger more serious side effects. That’s why, if you take a GLP-1 drug to manage your weight or diabetes, it’s important to communicate with your medical provider before you add any new medication or supplement to your regimen.

Though your doctor is a crucial partner in helping you avoid any potential interactions, experts say there are a handful of supplements that are widely known to cause problems and should be generally avoided. Some of these undermine the benefits of weight-loss drugs, while others heighten them to dangerous effects. These are the seven most common culprits behind unintended interactions.

RELATED: 10 Best Supplements for Weight Loss.

1
St. John’s Wort

Available as a tea, tablet supplement, and liquid tincture, St. John’s Wort is commonly used to treat mild cases of depression. However, experts caution that it can cause side effects, including dizziness, fatigue, photosensitivity, and more, and can interact with a wide range of other medications.

Phyllis Pobee, MD, an obesity medicine specialist, explains that St. John’s Wort can cause unintended consequences when paired with weight-loss medications in particular.

“This supplement can reduce the effectiveness of many weight-loss drugs by increasing their metabolic rate through liver enzymes. This can lead to decreased drug levels and reduced efficacy,” she says.

2
Green tea extract

Packed with polyphenols, green tea extract is often hailed for its ability to lower blood pressure, improve heart health, and aid in weight loss. In fact, some people intentionally combine this supplement with weight-loss drugs in an attempt to maximize the effects.

However, Raj Dasgupta, MD, an internal medicine specialist, pulmonologist, and chief medical advisor for Sleep Advisor, says you should exercise caution if you plan to take green tea extract alongside certain weight-loss drugs.

“With its caffeine content, green tea extract can interact with stimulant weight-loss drugs, causing side effects like jitteriness, sleep disturbances, and increased blood pressure,” he tells Best Life.

Pobee adds that this goes for any supplement that contains caffeine: “While caffeine is commonly used to boost metabolism, high doses can cause or exacerbate anxiety, high blood pressure, and insomnia, especially when taken with stimulant-based weight-loss medications. It can intensify these side effects, leading to potential health risks.”

3
Vitamin C

Vitamin C is among the most popular supplements on the market, often used to boost immune function and improve the health of bones, teeth, ligaments, blood vessels, and more.

However, Suzanne J. Ferree, MD, a doctor specializing in performance and longevity medicine, says it’s best to avoid vitamin C while taking certain weight-loss peptides. She explains that vitamin C can aggravate reflux, which is a common side effect of this type of weight-loss medication.

4
Turmeric

In addition to fighting inflammation with its antioxidant properties, some people use turmeric supplements to aid in weight loss and digestion. However, Ferree advises against combining curcumin or turmeric supplements with weight-loss drugs.

She notes that, like vitamin C, turmeric can exacerbate reflux. She adds that it can also inhibit the enzyme DPP4, which enhances the breakdown of GLP-1. “This has the theoretical potential to make weight-loss injections more potent or long-lasting, causing more side effects,” she explains.

5
Charcoal and clay supplements

Charcoal and clay supplements are thought to reduce gas and bloating and help regulate digestion. Some people also take these supplements to bind with and remove toxins from the body, though there is scant research to support this claim.

Ferree says that if you’re taking a weight-loss medication, you should probably avoid pairing it with these types of supplements. “Charcoal, clays or other detox binders…tend to be constipating and may aggravate the side effect of constipation,” she tells Best Life.

6
Butyrate

A senior man taking a supplement capsule with a glass of water

Butyrate is a short-chain amino fatty acid that’s naturally produced by your body as it breaks down fiber in the digestive system. Though the best way to increase your natural butyrate levels is to eat fresh fruits and vegetables containing soluble, fermentable fiber, some people turn to supplements.

However, Ferree says that this can interact with weight-loss medications such as Ozempic or Wegovy, which are a class of drugs known as GLP-1 agonists.

“Butyrate, either as sodium butyrate, tributyrin, or the ketone esters, also works to raise GLP-1,” Ferree explains. “While we have found these helpful to wean our patients off the weight-loss injections when they reach their weight-loss goals, we sometimes find it aggravates side effects of weight-loss medicines while on them.”

The post Is Retatrutide Poised to Overtake Ozempic as the Hottest Weight-Loss Drug? appeared first on Best Life.

]]>
For years, Ozempic and similar GLP-1 medications have dominated the weight loss conversation—but a new “game changer” drug from Eli Lilly may soon shift the landscape. In a newly-announced Phase 3 clinical trial, the triple receptor agonist drug retatrutide delivered some of the most dramatic weight loss results seen to date. Its use also came with an unexpected bonus: Meaningful relief from knee osteoarthritis pain.

RELATED: The No. 1 Ozempic Side Effect “Nobody Warns About.”

In the 68-week trial, adults with obesity and knee osteoarthritis who took the highest dose of retatrutide (12 mg) lost an average of 28.7 percent of their body weight, or about 71 pounds. By comparison, most approved GLP-1 drugs, including semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, typically produce average weight loss of 10 to 15 percent.

What makes retatrutide different is how it works. While Ozempic targets a single hormone pathway (GLP-1), retatrutide activates three receptors: GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon. This broader hormonal approach may help explain its outsized effects on weight loss and metabolism.

An Eli Lilly press release emphasizes that the benefits go beyond weight loss. Participants taking retatrutide also reported substantial reductions in knee pain of roughly 75 percent, as well as improved physical function. Notably, more than one in eight patients became completely pain-free by the end of the trial—an outcome that could be life-changing for people whose excess weight limits mobility and daily activity.

The drug also showed improvements in cardiovascular risk markers, including cholesterol, triglycerides, inflammation levels, and blood pressure. At the highest dose, systolic blood pressure fell by an average of 14 mmHg, a meaningful drop from a heart-health perspective.

RELATED: Doctors Warn That Drugs Like Ozempic Are Making You “Skinny Fat.”

As with other incretin-based drugs—those that mimic the body’s natural incretin hormones to increase insulin and reduce appetite—use of retatrutide produced several side effects, including nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and constipation. Discontinuation rates due to side effects were higher at the top dose but remained comparable to what’s been seen with other powerful weight loss medications.

While the once-weekly jab appears to be the most effective weight loss drug yet, it’s important to note that retatrutide is not yet FDA-approved—and it has not yet been compared to drugs like Ozempic or Mounjaro in clinical settings. However, with seven additional Phase 3 trials expected to wrap up in 2026, experts believe it could soon become a major option for people with significant weight loss needs—especially those managing obesity-related joint pain.

If approved, retatrutide may not just rival Ozempic—it could redefine what’s possible in medical weight loss. However, ABC News reports that it could take months, if not years, to see the high-performing product in pharmacies.

5 Antioxidant-Rich Foods Doctors Say May Mimic Ozempic’s Weight Loss Effects https://bestlifeonline.com/antioxidant-rich-foods-weight-loss/ Tue, 03 Feb 2026 12:30:54 +0000 https://bestlifeonline.com/?p=598948 According to a Nov. 2025 KFF poll, about one in eight U.S. adults (12 percent)...

The post 5 Antioxidant-Rich Foods Doctors Say May Mimic Ozempic’s Weight Loss Effects appeared first on Best Life.

]]>
According to a Nov. 2025 KFF poll, about one in eight U.S. adults (12 percent) is currently taking a GLP-1 weight-loss medication such as Ozempic or Wegovy. These drugs work by suppressing appetite, stabilizing blood sugar levels, and promoting fullness and satiety. However, weight loss medication isn’t right for everyone, and it’s not a panacea for those who take it.

The drug works in conjunction with the help of major dietary changes, which can make or break your weight loss progress. And whether or not you’re taking a GLP-1, experts say that certain foods can help trigger Ozempic-like effects, putting your weight loss goals within reach.

You’ll want to begin with a diet that’s rich in unprocessed, plant-based, nutrient-dense foods, says Christopher McGowan, MD, a triple board-certified obesity medicine specialist. In particular, eating foods that are full of antioxidants and fiber may be especially beneficial for shedding pounds.

McGowan says that beyond helping you lose weight, these foods can also help protect your body from the negative effects of excess weight, “including insulin resistance, metabolic dysregulation, increased free fatty acids, and chronic low-grade inflammation.”

“Antioxidants are natural scavengers that can help to neutralize the oxidative stress caused by free radicals within the body, helping to mitigate some of the inflammatory changes that occur from excess weight and obesity. These effects can help to reduce cellular damage, which could have a downstream impact on obesity-related conditions like cardiovascular disease,” he tells Best Life.

Wondering which antioxidant-rich foods can help you lose weight and protect your health in the process? These are the five foods doctors recommend for their weight loss benefits.

1
Dark-colored fruits and vegetables

Color-coding your meal plan and striving to include lots of dark-colored plant foods is one way to ensure that you get plenty of antioxidants in your diet. As a 2020 study published in the journal Current Research in Food Science notes, antioxidant compounds are often directly responsible for plants’ pigmentation.

“For example, anthocyanins being one of the main phenolic groups found in fruits and vegetables are responsible for red, blue and purple color in fruits and vegetables. Carotenoids are associated with red or orange color, while chlorophyll gives the green color to fruits and vegetables present in,” the study authors write.

“Darker-colored fruits and vegetables tend to be loaded with phytonutrients and antioxidants,” says McGowan. “Examples include dark berries (blueberries and blackberries), tomatoes, leafy greens, and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and Brussels sprouts.”

2
Nuts and seeds

Nuts and Seeds in small bowls on a gray background

When you think of antioxidant-rich foods, nuts and seeds may be left off your list. However, they’re among the plants with the highest antioxidant content, including ample polyphenols and selenium.

“Tiny but mighty, nuts and seeds deliver a protein, fiber, and nutrient punch with every bite,” says Harvard Health Publishing. “Nuts are flavorful little packages containing healthy unsaturated fats, protein, fiber, and other nutrients.”

Walnuts, rich in folate, vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, and magnesium, are believed to be especially beneficial for weight loss. In fact, one recent study concluded that, similar to certain weight loss drugs that reduce “food noise,” walnuts may activate parts of the brain involved in appetite and impulse control.

3
Beans and legumes

Beans and Lentils Anti-Aging Foods

Beans and legumes are also rich in antioxidants such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, saponins, tocopherols, and vitamin C. Besides that, they’re brimming with protein and fiber, making them a powerhouse addition to your weight-loss diet.

“Beans are low in fat and the glycemic index. They are high in fiber and plant protein. They contribute significantly to satiety and they improve the gut microbiome. Clearly, they have the potential to play a meaningful role in the battle against obesity,” says a 2020 study in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism.

Once again, looking for deeply colored plants will help increase your antioxidant intake. “Most reports have suggested that legumes with colored seed coats possess strong antioxidant potential owing to the presence of high content of antioxidants,” notes a separate 2020 study published in the journal Sustainable Agriculture Reviews.

4
Green tea

green tea

Green tea is packed with catechins, flavonoids, and polyphenols, and is believed to increase metabolism and help you burn fat faster.

In fact, a 2013 study published in the Journal of Research in Medical Sciences found that drinking green tea every day had major weight loss and health benefits: “Consumption of four cups of green tea per day caused a significant decrease in body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, and systolic blood pressure in this group. No significant change was seen in the other groups and between group comparisons.”

5
Foods that are rich in vitamin C

To turbocharge your weight loss, McGowan also suggests eating foods that are rich in the antioxidant vitamin C, such as “citrus fruits, red and green peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, strawberries, Brussels sprouts, and cantaloupe.”

“Vitamin C status is inversely related to body mass. Individuals with adequate vitamin C status oxidize 30 percent more fat during a moderate exercise bout than individuals with low vitamin C status; thus, vitamin C-depleted individuals may be more resistant to fat mass loss,” explains a 2005 study in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

Physical performance tests like the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test do more than evaluate strength, balance, and mobility in the moment. Because those everyday movements rely on muscle strength, coordination, reaction time, and cardiovascular function, the results can offer meaningful clues about long-term health and independence, too.

For instance, in one 2020 study, people with abnormal Timed Up and Go results had a 13 percent higher risk of cardiovascular events and a 56 percent higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease, highlighting how closely mobility and heart health are connected. When movement becomes slower or less stable, it may signal underlying changes that affect the entire body.

The 8-Foot Timed Up and Go (8UG) test is a slight variation on the original assessment, modifying the walking distance while keeping the same basic movements. Experts say this version may offer especially valuable insight into real-world fall risk and overall functional health, making it a practical tool for identifying early warning signs and tracking changes over time. And, if you can do it in four seconds or less past the age of 60, it could mean you’re in great shape for your age.

What is the 8-Foot Timed Up and Go test?

To perform the test, a standard chair is placed at one end of an eight-foot walkway (some traditional versions of the test promoted by the CDC feature a 10-foot walkway).

The participant begins seated, with their back against the chair and arms resting on their thighs. On the signal to start, they stand up, walk eight feet at a comfortable but brisk pace, turn around a marker, return to the chair, and sit down again. Repeat the exercise twice, recording your score in seconds and using the better of the two as your final result.

Faster times generally reflect better balance, leg strength, and coordination. Slower times suggest a higher likelihood of falling.

In a 2016 study, the 8-Foot Timed Up and Go correctly identified a much larger share of people with a history of falls than the traditional Timed Up and Go Test and another agility test known as the Activities-Specific Balance Confidence (ABC) scale.

Its ability to detect fall risk remained strong even in participants with mild cognitive impairment, showing that memory or thinking changes did not significantly distort performance. Because of this balance between sensitivity and specificity, researchers concluded that it is a more practical tool for identifying fall risk in community-dwelling older adults.

According to The New York Times, your score on the test will be interpreted differently depending on your age and gender. “For people in their 60s, an above-average score is around four seconds and below average is five or six seconds. For people in their 70s and 80s, five or six seconds is above average,” the outlet reports.

How to improve your score:

If your test reveals a high fall risk, don’t worry—there are still ways to improve both your score and what it represents. Following an activity routine that builds strength, agility, balance, and speed can improve health outcomes.

Robert Lockie, a professor of kinesiology at California State Fullerton, told The Times that single-leg stands and leg-strengthening exercises such as knee squats can be especially effective in turning the tide.

However, most exercises done with precision should help your score rise: Chair stands build leg power, while walking drills improve gait speed. Balance exercises, such as standing on one foot or practicing controlled turns, can enhance stability. Consistent practice may not only improve test performance but also reduce real-world fall risk.

]]>
Every holiday season, as we come together to celebrate, flu levels spike. But even as we navigate past a risky few weeks for potential transmission, flu activity remains high across the United States, and federal health officials caution that the season has not yet peaked.

While some surveillance indicators declined or held steady this week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says those changes are likely tied to reduced healthcare visits and reporting during the holidays, not a true drop in infections. Elevated flu activity is expected to continue for several more weeks—and is currently circulating at “very high” levels in 25 states.

Thus far, the health authority has classified the current season as “moderately severe.” Eight influenza-associated pediatric deaths were reported to the CDC this week, bringing the total to 17 so far for the 2025–2026 season. Overall, the CDC estimates at least 15 million flu illnesses, 180,000 hospitalizations, and 7,400 deaths nationwide to date.

Influenza A remains the dominant virus right now. During the most recent reporting week, public health laboratories identified 1,259 flu viruses, with more than 97 percent classified as influenza A. Among those subtyped, over 92 percent were influenza A(H3N2), a strain often linked to higher hospitalization rates.

Where are doctors seeing the greatest surges? Read on to find out if your state is on high alert, according to national health authorities.

25 states have “very high” flu levels.

Every week, the Influenza Division at the CDC collects and analyzes flu data from across the country, ultimately presenting a surveillance report known as FluView.

In the most recent report, which used data collected between December 28 and January 3, 25 states and Puerto Rico were identified as having “very high” flu levels. In other words, according to the CDC’s ILI Activity Levels, half of the country is currently experiencing the highest levels of flu. Those states include:

 • Alabama
 • Colorado
 • Connecticut
 • Georgia
 • Idaho
 • Kansas
 • Louisiana
 • Maine
 • Maryland
 • Massachusetts
 • Michigan
 • Minnesota
 • Missouri
 • Nebraska
 • New Hampshire
 • New Jersey
 • New Mexico
 • New York
 • North Carolina
 • Ohio
 • Rhode Island
 • South Carolina
 • Tennessee
 • Texas
 • Virginia

These states have the highest levels of all.

Fourteen states, marked in dark purple on a CDC map used to illustrate flu severity, currently have the highest flu levels of all. Those states include:

 • Colorado
 • Georgia
 • Louisiana
 • Massachusetts
 • Michigan
 • Missouri
 • New Hampshire
 • New Jersey
 • New Mexico
 • New York
 • North Carolina
 • Ohio
 • South Carolina
 • Tennessee

Of those states, the Southeastern U.S. appears to be weathering the worst of it: Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, and Louisiana are all categorized under Activity Level 13—currently the highest level on the list. Colorado is the only state outside of that region experiencing such high levels.

How to protect against the flu:

When flu circulation is high, layering a few proven precautions can significantly lower your risk of getting sick. Start with vaccination, which remains the most effective way to reduce severe illness, hospitalization, and complications, even in seasons when flu activity is intense.

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when washing is not possible, especially after being in public places.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, since the flu virus most often enters the body this way. In crowded indoor settings, wearing a well-fitting mask and keeping some distance from people who are coughing or otherwise visibly ill can reduce exposure.

Disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home and work, and prioritize sleep, hydration, and balanced meals to support immune function. And, if you develop flu-like symptoms, stay home, limit contact with others, and seek medical advice early—particularly if you are at higher risk for complications.

The post Surging Flu Strain Is Making Older People Sicker, Doctors Warn appeared first on Best Life.

]]>
If it seems like everyone around you is down for the count this week, that’s because flu and other respiratory illnesses are indeed on the rise. A new flu strain is propelling a surge in cases across the U.S.—and making older people sicker, some doctors warn.

Every year, the flu mutates to create a new strain, which scientists then work to develop vaccines against. This year’s H3N2 strain is considered an especially harsh variant, associated with an increased risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death in older populations, The Washington Post recently reported.

RELATED: Flu Levels Are “Very High” and “High” in These 14 States.

A respiratory virus tracker produced and monitored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals an especially severe spike in flu, Covid, and RSV risk this week: “As of January 5, 2026, the amount of acute respiratory illness causing people to seek health care is at a very high level for the first time in the current 2025-2026 season,” the health authority writes.

Some states have experienced a particularly alarming increase in flu cases over recent weeks. For instance, in the week ending December 20, New York disclosed a record-breaking number of flu cases in a single week with 72,133 infections, ABC News reported.

Making matters worse, many experts say that U.S. drugmakers finalized their flu shot formulations before the newest strain emerged—meaning they could be less effective in protecting the public.

The good news? Experts say that while the threat is certainly trending upward, it’s not entirely unexpected. “It seems to be a bit of a swift increase, but it’s not atypical,” Jennifer Nuzzo, DrPH, an epidemiologist and director of the Pandemic Center at the Brown University School of Public Health, told The Washington Post. “We often see flu seasons come in sort of fast and furious.”

With that in mind, you can take many of the same precautions that you would to protect against the flu in any winter season. Frequent hand washing, avoiding touching your face, staying away from people who are visibly sick, sanitizing surfaces, and covering your coughs and sneezes can all help prevent transmission.

RELATED: You Can Get the Nasal Spray Flu Vaccine Delivered to Your House This Year—Here’s How.

Of course, getting your annual flu vaccine is one of the simplest and most effective steps you can take to protect your health—and it’s especially important if you’re over the age of 65. As we age, the immune system naturally weakens, and older adults account for the majority of flu-related hospitalizations and fatalities each year.

Those deterred by this year’s lowered vaccine effectiveness should understand that even an imperfect fit will reduce your risk of severe illness, prevent complications, and shorten recovery time. Beyond protecting yourself, getting vaccinated also helps shield loved ones and others in your community who may be vulnerable.

“The flu vaccine may not prevent you from getting flu, but it certainly will keep you out of the hospital and may just reduce the severity of your symptoms or how long you’re sick for,” Nuzzo said.

The post COVID Levels Are “Very High” and “High” in These 13 States appeared first on Best Life.

]]>
Year after year, as we head indoors for winter, respiratory illnesses such as COVID, flu, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) tend to surge—and this year is no exception. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that COVID activity remains “low” in most parts of the country, experts warn that the virus is still circulating and rising in certain areas.

In fact, the CDC’s latest virus tracker data shows that overall respiratory illness activity has climbed to some of the highest levels seen this season, driven by a combination of multiple viruses spreading at once. Against that backdrop, a smaller but concerning group of states is standing out: Right now, 13 states are reporting “very high” or “high” COVID levels, signaling more intense local transmission and a greater risk of severe illness for vulnerable populations.

RELATED: Flu Levels Are “Very High” and “High” in These 14 States.

These states have “very high” COVID levels.

The CDC regularly tests wastewater (sewage) to detect traces of infectious diseases circulating in a community, even if people don’t have symptoms. This is especially useful for detecting COVID rates, since Cleveland Clinic estimates 20 percent of cases are asymptomatic.

Health authorities also use this data “as an early warning that levels of infections may be increasing or decreasing in your community.”

According to this data, five states are currently listed by the CDC as having “very high” levels of COVID, with two located in the Northeast and three in the Midwest:

 • Connecticut
 • Massachusetts
 • Nebraska
 • Ohio
 • South Dakota

In these states, elevated transmission suggests the virus is spreading more widely within communities, increasing the likelihood of outbreaks and putting added strain on healthcare systems.

Public health experts emphasize that residents—especially older adults, people with underlying health conditions, and those who are immunocompromised—may face a higher risk of severe illness in areas with very high activity and should take extra precautions as the respiratory virus season continues.

These states have “high” COVID levels.

An additional eight states have “high” COVID levels this week, according to CDC data last updated on January 4. Once again, the Northeast and Midwest featured heavily on the list, with just one Northwestern state and one Southern state breaking the pattern. Those states are:

 • Arkansas
 • Indiana
 • Kansas
 • Maine
 • Michigan
 • Montana
 • New Hampshire
 • West Virginia

How can I protect myself against COVID this season?

As COVID continues to circulate this season, the most effective way to protect yourself is to layer proven prevention strategies. Staying up to date on your COVID vaccination remains a cornerstone of protection, especially for older adults and people with underlying health conditions, as vaccines significantly reduce the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death.

If you are at high risk of severe infection and living in an area with high or very high COVID levels, wearing a high-quality mask—such as an N95 or KN95—in crowded indoor spaces can further lower your risk of infection. Improving ventilation at home and in shared spaces, whether by opening windows or using air purifiers, also helps reduce the concentration of virus particles in the air.

Every day habits matter, too. If you feel sick, staying home and getting tested can prevent unknowingly spreading the virus to others. Frequent handwashing, while not the primary defense against airborne spread, still helps limit transmission from contaminated surfaces.

Paying attention to local COVID activity levels can guide your decisions about gatherings and travel, and taking extra precautions when rates are elevated can make a meaningful difference.

The post 7 Best Gut-Health Foods to Eat This Year, Gastroenterologist Says appeared first on Best Life.

]]>
Oftentimes, the best advice regarding social media health trends is to take them with a grain of salt. After all, it’s usually not doctors peddling the latest supplement or diet. But when it comes to gut-health trends, an expert has entered the chat to cut through all the noise. Gastroenterologist Joseph Salhab, MD, recently shared the seven best gut-health foods to eat this year, and some of them (we’re looking at you, pickles!) might surprise you.

RELATED: Gastroenterologists Say This Is the #1 Food for Your Gut Health.

1
Fresh Dates

closeup of fresh dates

In a new TikTok video, Salhab shares the foods that should be trendy this year for gut health. First on his list are fresh dates, which he refers to as “nature’s multivitamin.”

He notes that this fruit is blood-sugar friendly, despite being a sweet treat, and that it’s a “polyphenol powerhouse.”

Polyphenols are natural plant compounds that have strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In fact, a 2014 study published in the Journal of Nutritional Science found that consuming dates may improve colon health by boosting good gut bacteria and potentially slowing the growth of colon cancer cells.

Additionally, dates are very high in fiber, which promotes digestive health.

2
Fermented Pickles

Pickles might not be the first food you think of in relation to gut health, but Salhab says those that are fermented without vinegar function as a “natural probiotic.”

This is because when pickles are fermented with vinegar, the vinegar kills both bad and good bacteria. However, when they’re fermented naturally in salt water, beneficial gut bacteria can flourish.

In general, fermented foods—including kimchi, sauerkraut, and kefir—are great for gut health because the good bacteria produced during the fermentation process create probiotics, which, in turn, reduce inflammation and improve your immune system.

3
Greek Yogurt

Strained yogurt

Greek yogurt is another food rich in probiotics. It’s also high in protein, which helps keep you fuller for longer. And unlike traditional yogurt, it’s lower in lactose, which is easier on your digestive system.

Salhab points out that Greek yogurt has even been shown to reduce colon cancer risk. To his point, a recent study published in the journal Gut Microbes found that, because of the beneficial bacteria Bifidobacterium found in yogurt, consuming the food long term may protect against the growth of specific colon cancer tumors.

4
Watermelon and Lime

Salhab says that watermelon and lime can also reduce the risk of colon cancer, as well as stomach cancer.

A 2023 study published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology studied the effects of different fruit consumption on colon cancer risk. These researchers found that watermelon was linked to a 26 percent lower risk (the highest), while citrus fruits were linked to a 9 percent lower risk. (Of note, apples reduced the risk by 25 percent and kiwis by 13 percent.)

A 2021 study published in the Journal of Functional Foods arrived at similar findings regarding watermelon.

“Watermelon had one of the strongest effects on decreasing colon cancer risk in this meta-analysis—probably because of its lycopene content,” Salhab previously explained of this study. (Lycopene is the antioxidant that gives watermelon its coloring.)

As for limes, he noted that they are “packed with antioxidants and vitamin C.” So, to enjoy these fruits together, drizzle a bit of lime juice on your cut-up watermelon!

5
Sourdough Bread

Bread gets a bad name, but Salhab says sourdough bread is actually high in fiber and prebiotics. He adds that it’s a “bloat-friendly” food thanks to being lower in gluten than traditional bread.

As Best Life previously explained, “That’s because the fermentation process helps break those agents down, consequently leading to a spike in prebiotic and probiotic properties, according to a 2021 report published in the journal Microorganisms.”

6
Broccoli

Liver health is a big part of gut health, as blood from your digestive system flows straight to the liver. And Salhab says the compound sulforaphane that’s found in broccoli “increases activity of the liver’s detox enzymes.” In other words, this veggie can help your liver to remove toxins from your body. (Sulforaphane is especially abundant in broccoli stalks.)

7
Berries

Since berries are so high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory flavonoids, eating these fruits can help with everything from brain health to anti-inflammation to healthier skin.

Since they’re high in fiber (especially raspberries and blackberries), berries also help with digestion and weight loss. And Salhab says they improve blood flow to the liver.

In fact, an analysis published in the journal Nutrition Reviews cited research showing that berries help to lower “bad” LDL cholesterol, reduce overall fat damage in the blood, control blood sugar, and boost the body’s ability to fight cell damage.

10 Amazing Health Benefits of Eating Dark Chocolate, According to Science https://bestlifeonline.com/health-benefits-dark-chocolate/ Sun, 04 Jan 2026 12:00:00 +0000 https://bestlifeonline.com/?p=595488 When you want to have the occasional sweet treat, you don’t necessarily need to justify...

The post 10 Amazing Health Benefits of Eating Dark Chocolate, According to Science appeared first on Best Life.

]]>
When you want to have the occasional sweet treat, you don’t necessarily need to justify it with health benefits—but it’s still great news when those benefits exist. Dark chocolate stands out as one of the best desserts you can choose, full of antioxidants called flavanols that confer a whole host of health gains. Though it’s best to enjoy it in moderation—it’s still relatively high in calories, sugar, and fat—you may, in fact, be making a wellness-conscious decision by incorporating high-cocoa, polyphenol-rich chocolate into your routine. Ahead, learn about the 10 biggest dark chocolate health benefits.

RELATED: 22 Health Benefits Coming From Your Cup of Coffee.

1
It can lower your Type 2 diabetes risk.

Man talking to doctor about being screened for diabetes

Consuming milk chocolate has been linked to long-term weight gain, a known risk factor for Type 2 diabetes. However, a recent study published in The British Medical Journal (BMJ) suggests that eating dark chocolate in moderation may have the opposite effect.

The researchers analyzed more than 30 years of data from over 192,000 participants in major U.S. health studies, all of whom were diabetes-free at the start. Participants tracked chocolate intake by type and amount, along with weight and diabetes status.

While eating at least five ounces of any chocolate weekly was linked to a 10 percent lower diabetes risk compared to those who “never or rarely” eat chocolate, dark chocolate stood out. Those who ate at least five servings of dark chocolate per week had a 21 percent lower risk, with an added 3 percent “reduction in risk” for each additional day—meaning a daily serving could lower risk by up to 27 percent.

2
It could slow cellular aging.

Cocoa Beans and Cocoa Powder with Chocolate Bars on Wood Table.

A new, December 2025 study published in the journal Aging suggests that dark chocolate may also help slow down cellular aging, thanks to a natural compound called theobromine. Theobromine comes from cocoa and is found in higher amounts in dark chocolate than in milk chocolate.

Researchers looked at how levels of theobromine in the blood were linked to signs of biological aging, which show how “old” the body’s cells appear—not just a person’s actual age. They found that people with higher theobromine levels tended to have cells that aged more slowly.

The study analyzed blood samples from two large European groups, including more than 1,600 people in total. In both groups, higher theobromine levels were strongly linked to lower “epigenetic age acceleration,” meaning their cells looked younger at a molecular level.

The researchers also checked whether other compounds from cocoa or coffee could explain the results, but the link remained strongest for theobromine. These findings suggest that the health benefits long associated with dark chocolate may reach all the way down to our cells, potentially helping slow the aging process over time.

3
It can improve your heart health—including cholesterol and blood pressure.

Man checking blood pressure

Another study looked at how consuming dark chocolate affects heart health, focusing primarily on its impact on cholesterol and blood pressure. Subjects ate one bar of dark chocolate with plant sterols (PS) two times per day for four weeks, then switched to a bar without plant sterols for an additional four weeks.

“Serum lipids and other cardiovascular markers were measured at baseline and after four and eight weeks,” the study authors explain. “Blood pressure was measured every two weeks. Regular consumption of the PS-containing chocolate bar resulted in reductions of 2.0 and 5.3 percent in serum total and LDL cholesterol, respectively.”

They also found that consuming cocoa flavanols reduced systolic blood pressure at week eight.

“Results indicate that regular consumption of chocolate bars containing PS and CF as part of a low-fat diet may support cardiovascular health by lowering cholesterol and improving blood pressure,” the study says.

4
It may slash your stroke risk.

An unrecognizable girl shares chocolate with her mother outdoors

A meta-analysis reviewing three studies on chocolate consumption and stroke found that eating dark chocolate could also cut your stroke risk in half.

The researchers suggest that this could be because chocolate is packed with antioxidants known as flavonoids, which are known to have anti-inflammatory, anti-atherogenic, and antithrombotic properties that can decrease the risk of ischemic stroke in particular.

While this is encouraging, the researchers note that their study does not establish causality. “More research is needed to determine whether chocolate truly lowers stroke risk or whether healthier people are simply more likely to eat chocolate than others,” said study author Sarah Sahib, BScCA.

5
It may boost your gut health.

Good Gut Health

Dark chocolate may do more than satisfy a sweet craving—it can also support gut health. Cocoa is rich in plant compounds called polyphenols, which act like prebiotics that feed the “good” bacteria living in your gut, some studies have shown.

This shift in gut bacteria may have wide-ranging benefits. Research shows that cocoa polyphenols can increase levels of beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium while reducing less helpful strains. A healthier gut microbiome is linked to better digestion, reduced inflammation, and improved heart and metabolic health.

Over time, these changes may also support immune function and blood sugar control, showing how small dietary choices—like choosing dark chocolate with a high cocoa content—can positively affect overall health.

6
It can improve your memory and cognition.

Person doing a crossword puzzle in the newspaper

There’s also research to support the notion that dark chocolate can boost your brain health. A 2016 study in the journal Appetite says that the cocoa flavanols and methylxanthines found in chocolate were positively associated with cognitive performance.

“Habitual chocolate intake was related to cognitive performance, measured with an extensive battery of neuropsychological tests,” the study authors write. “More frequent chocolate consumption was significantly associated with better performance on the Global Composite score, Visual-Spatial Memory and Organization, Working Memory, Scanning and Tracking, Abstract Reasoning, and the Mini-Mental State Examination.”

7
It can protect your skin.

Another study—this one published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology—looked at how chocolate consumption affected the skin health of 30 healthy subjects. They assigned half to eat 20 grams of high-flavanol (HF) chocolate, and the other half to eat the same amount of low-flavanol (LF) chocolate.

“Our study demonstrated that regular consumption of a chocolate rich in flavanols confers significant photoprotection and can thus be effective at protecting human skin from harmful UV effects. Conventional chocolate has no such effect,” the study noted.

8
It can help you get your essential vitamins and minerals.

Gourmet dark chocolate bar with cocoa beans

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), dark chocolate also contains important vitamins and minerals, which can help you reach your nutritional goals. A 100-gram bar of dark chocolate with 70–85 percent cocoa contains 96 percent of the daily value (DV) for copper, 66 percent of the DV for iron, 57 percent of the DV for magnesium, and 39 percent of the DV for fiber.

However, this amount contains several servings and would also contain roughly 500 calories.

9
It can make you happier.

closeup of a smiling woman eating a bar of dark chocolate

You’re not imagining it: Eating chocolate really can make you happier. A 2022 study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry compared the psychological effects of eating 85 percent chocolate (DC85), 70 percent chocolate (DC70), or no chocolate over a three-week study period and found that consuming 85 percent dark chocolate could boost mood significantly.

“Mood states were measured using the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS). Daily consumption of dark chocolate significantly reduced negative affect in DC85, but not in DC70,” according to the study.

10
It can help you stick to your goals.

a list of goals drawn on a napkin

Finally, a 2015 study published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology found that eating dark chocolate could actually help you reach your goals.

“This research tests the idea that goal-pursuit that requires extended inhibition of desires, such as weight loss and financial saving, can benefit from including planned hedonic deviations in the goal-striving plan,” the researchers explain.

Building in a deviation from restrictive goals—in this case, having a sweet treat with ample health benefits—could help you regain self-regulation, motivation, and positivity, “which all contribute to facilitating long-term goal-adherence.”

The post 7 Clothing Items People Over 65 Should Avoid in Snow and Ice appeared first on Best Life.

]]>
Deciding what to wear can be a tough proposition—even when the weather is cooperating. Throw in a wintry mix of snow and slush, and you may find your wardrobe choices even more overwhelming. Adults over the age of 65 should be especially thoughtful when it comes to winter dressing.

“With snow, ice, and freezing temperatures, winter weather can pose a serious health hazard to seniors,” Sarah Arfeen, chief editor of Senior Care Corner, tells Best Life.

However, she notes that seniors should keep up with their activities throughout the year and also enjoy the winter season. With that said, we spoke to Arfeen and other experts to find out which seven clothing items those over 65 should avoid when it snows.

RELATED: If You’re Over 65, Don’t Wear These 7 Clothing Items on a Walk.

1
Shearling boots

closeup of someone wearing Ugg boots in the snow

Cozy, shearling boots, such as the popular Ugg boots, seem like they’d be made for snow. They’re super warm, and you’ve probably seen plenty of advertisements for sprays that claim to make your suede boots waterproof.

But this is a common misconception, as even Ugg itself notes that any waterproofing is only meant to “handle surprise drizzles and life’s little spills.” They add that, for most of their classic boots, “water can seep in through the seams.”

More often than not, these types of boots offer no traction and leave you vulnerable to slipping—so avoid them even if there’s a slight possibility of ice on the ground.

“Whether they are real Uggs or fake Uggs, we’re dealing with footwear that offers no substantial and necessary orthopedic support for the foot and the ankle,” added Rock Positano, MD, director of the Non-surgical Foot and Ankle Service for the Hospital for Special Surgery, in a former Daily Mail article.

“Whether you have a high arch, or a flat arch, inherently there are issues. You have the support issue under the foot, and the fact that there’s no support around the ankle joint or the Achilles tendon,” he noted.

2
Cotton clothing items

senior couple carrying skis and poles on snowy hill

When the temperatures drop—and especially if it’s wet outside from snow or sleet—it’s a good idea to layer with wool, fleece, or insulating fabrics. However, cotton may do more harm than good.

“Cotton is a natural fiber, but when wet, it loses its insulating properties. In cold weather, if cotton clothing becomes wet from snow, rain, or sweat, it can quickly draw heat away from the body, leading to discomfort and an increased risk of hypothermia,” Arfeen says.

This applies not only to your clothing items but socks, too.

RELATED: If You’re Over 65, Don’t Wear These 5 Clothing Items to Sleep.

3
Tight clothing

mature man jogging in the snow

Layering your clothing can take a slightly snug item and make it downright constrictive. That’s why Arfeen recommends opting for looser layers, which will add insulation without causing discomfort or limiting your mobility.

“Tight clothing can restrict blood circulation, particularly to the extremities,” she says. “In snowy weather, proper blood circulation is crucial for maintaining warmth in the hands, feet, and other areas. Impaired circulation increases the risk of frostbite and discomfort.”

As the National Institute on Aging (NIA) notes, warm, loose layers are preferable: “The air between the layers helps to keep you warm.”

4
Denim

man shoveling snow from front steps

If you wear denim daily, you may want to make snow days the exception to the rule.

“Denim is a thick and heavy fabric that we often believe will offer protection, but it can become stiff and uncomfortable when wet. It also absorbs moisture, making it a poor choice for snowy conditions where staying dry is essential for maintaining warmth,” Arfeen says.

5
Metal jewelry

older woman putting earrings in

Your jewelry can also impact your comfort and well-being.

“Metal has high thermal conductivity, meaning it can quickly become very cold when exposed to low temperatures,” Arfeen explains. “If seniors wear metal jewelry outdoors in snow, it can make their skin colder and increase the risk of discomfort, especially in extremities like fingers or ears.”

“Wear a waterproof coat or jacket if it’s snowy or rainy,” says the NIA. But there’s still more to consider.

Senior Helpers, a caregiving provider in Illinois, advises choosing a jacket that goes at least to your knees.

They recommend the following warm-weather materials: Goose or duck down-filled, faux fur, fleece, or wool. However, they say “wool or wool-blended fabric is the warmest option and is naturally water-resistant.”

Worn-out winter accessories

closeup of a smiling senior man outside on a snowy day

Finally, it’s essential to wear well-maintained winter accessories in snow and frigid temperatures. Arfeen warns that regular wear and tear can often create gaps or openings in the fabric of scarves, hats, and gloves, allowing cold air to penetrate and body heat to escape.

“To ensure optimal comfort and protection in snowy conditions, seniors should regularly inspect their winter accessories for signs of wear and tear,” Arfeen says. “Over time, these items can lose their ability to retain heat effectively, exposing seniors to the risk of feeling cold and uncomfortable out in the snow.”

Additionally, be sure any scarves are wrapped and tucked into your jacket. If they’re left long and loose, they can pose a tripping hazard.

To keep even warmer, the NIA suggests “using disposable or rechargeable hand- and foot-warming products.”

And if anything you’re wearing happens to get wet while you’re outside, change out of those damp clothes immediately.

]]>
Any time you get hurt or sick, your body responds with inflammation. This is an important part of the healing process, as it helps to stimulate repair at the site of an injury or to launch an immune response to fight off infection. However, in some people, this can escalate into chronic inflammation in which the body launches a prolonged response without a particular threat present.

“This condition affects over one-third of the American population, leading to a spectrum of health issues including, but not limited to atherosclerosis, diabetes, hypertension, elevated cholesterol levels, obesity, joint degenerative arthritis, and pain,” says David Brady, ND, DC, chief medical officer at Designs for Health.

If a doctor confirms that you have chronic inflammation, you may be able to improve the condition by eating a healthy diet, exercising, improving your sleep quality, reducing your alcohol intake, and enacting other lifestyle interventions. However, taking anti-inflammatory supplements may also lower your levels and stave off related conditions.

“Pro-inflammatory states are associated with stroke, heart disease, and cancer,” says Daniel Landau, MD, an oncologist and the medical director of virtual hematology at the Medical University of South Carolina. “It stands to reason that supplements that can reduce inflammation may also decrease the risk of developing these conditions.

And according to doctors, these are the four best anti-inflammatory supplements.

RELATED: 12 Supplements You Should Never Take Together, According to Doctors.

1
Green Tea Extract

Green tea extract supplements contain an ample amount of the polyphenol epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). This particular compound is known to have anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties.

“From the cancer perspective, there have been some anti-inflammatory supplements that may offer protection for patients. Green tea is one that has been studied across cancer types,” says Landau.

In particular, studies suggest that green tea has a positive effect in preventing and delaying the spread of breast, ovarian, colorectal, lung, pancreatic, blood cancer, and more.

Green tea supplements are also known to help reduce one’s risk of a range of other inflammation-related conditions, including Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and liver disease.

2
Turmeric

Curcumin supplement capsules, turmeric powder in glass bowl and curcuma root in background.

Turmeric (curcumin) is another anti-inflammatory supplement that may help reduce your risk of chronic illness.

“Due to its antioxidant properties, turmeric can help improve infections and some cancers, reduce inflammation, and treat digestive problems,” the Mount Sinai Health Library says. “Antioxidants scavenge molecules in the body known as free radicals, which damage cell membranes, tamper with DNA, and even cause cell death. Antioxidants can fight free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause.”

Landau notes that the research is especially robust when it comes to certain cancer types.

“Turmeric has shown potential benefits in a number of studies for different cancers, including breast, lung, prostate, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL),” says the oncologist, who is also a contributing writer at The Mesothelioma Center.

Though he says that “several studies have suggested potential benefits,” he adds that “further studies need to be performed to answer the exact questions on what dose patients would need to take or on how to best supplement patients who are battling cancer with anti-inflammatory medications.”

3
Ginger Extract

Ginger Root

Ginger extract supplements also come highly recommended for their powerful anti-inflammatory benefits.

“Ginger contains bioactive compounds such as gingerol, which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects,” explains Dev Batra, MD, a double board-certified vascular and interventional radiologist at Texas Vascular Institute. “These compounds work by inhibiting the production of inflammatory substances and reducing inflammation in the body.”

One 2020 meta-analysis published in the journal Nutrients found that ginger supplements were especially beneficial for improving symptoms of osteoarthritis, which causes inflammation in the lining of joints.

Among eight studies that reported the anti-inflammatory effects of ginger supplementation, “arthritis-related diseases were the most conducted studies, particularly osteoarthritis (OA). Regarding OA, six studies investigated the efficiency of the constituents of ginger that serve as anti-inflammatory agents. All studies reported improvement following ginger intake compared to the control group,” the researchers wrote.

4
Vitamin K2

Another supplement that can be especially beneficial for those with arthritis is vitamin K2.

As Best Life previously shared, chiropractor and wellness influencer Eric Berg, DC, reported in a TikTok video that vitamin K2 can help decrease calcium buildup and calcification in your joints.

“It also decreases inflammation in the cartilage, and it also helps remodel, or rebuild, the cartilage,” he added.

Research backs up this claim, too. For example, a 2021 study published in the journal Current Developments in Nutrition found that vitamin K2 exhibited an “immunosuppressive function” in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

And a 2024 study published in the journal Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy concluded that vitamin K2 could protect knee joints affected by osteoarthritis by increasing bone mass, slowing down cartilage breakdown, and reducing inflammation.

5
Quercetin

Did you know that allergies are a type of inflammation? They occur when your immune system attacks allergens entering your body, thereby leading to inflammation. This is where quercetin supplements can help.

“Quercetin (which is a nutrient also found in many fruits, vegetables, and herbs) is a type of flavonoid that has antioxidant properties,” Megan Hilbert, MS, registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) at Top Nutrition Coaching, previously told Best Life. “Some research has shown [quercetin can] work as a ‘mast cell stabilizer’ that helps block the release of histamine that causes inflammation, which is associated with many allergic reactions.”

Research shows that quercetin does this by inhibiting the production of inflammatory cytokines and enzymes.

Moreover, a review article published in Frontiers in Immunology suggests that quercetin may help reduce symptoms in autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, and lupus.

6
Omega-3 Supplements

5 Surprising Benefits of Taking an Omega-3 Supplement, According to a Nutritionist

You can get omega-3s through your diet by eating oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines, anchovies), walnuts, chia seeds and flax seeds, and plant oils. But you can also consider omega-3 supplements if you’re suffering from inflammation.

Sarah Otto, co-founder and in-house nutritionist of Goodness Lover, previously explained to Best Life that research shows how omega-3s reduce the amount of inflammation-causing cellular substances while they increase an enzyme that helps protect our DNA.

As the Arthritis Foundation notes, additional research has linked omega-3s and fish oil with beneficial properties for those with rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, both inflammatory conditions.

7
Vitamin D

Senior woman holding omega-3 fish oil nutritional supplement and glass of water in her hands.

Finally, Batra suggests taking vitamin D if you’re hoping to relieve symptoms of inflammation.

“While primarily known for its role in bone health, vitamin D also modulates the immune system and reduces inflammation by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory molecules,” the doctor explains.

Brady agrees that vitamin D is among the best supplements for fighting inflammation: “Considering the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in approximately 40 percent of adults, the inclusion of vitamin D supplementation is critical.”

However, the experts emphasize that taking a holistic approach is always best if you want to lower your inflammation levels.

“Remember, while supplements can be helpful, maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, and managing stress are also key components of an anti-inflammatory lifestyle,” says Batra.

The post Flu Levels Are “Very High” and “High” in These 14 States appeared first on Best Life.

]]>
With all the travel, socializing, and gatherings, the hectic pace of the holiday season also tends to go hand in hand with a spike in people catching nasty viruses. Unfortunately, while COVID-19 rates appear to be relatively stable at the moment, this year appears to be shaping up as one of the worst for the flu in recent memory. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than a dozen states are currently listed as having “high” or “very high” reported rates of influenza-like illnesses (ILI) for the week ending on Dec. 13. Here’s which places are faring the worst.

RELATED: You Can Get the Nasal Spray Flu Vaccine Delivered to Your House This Year—Here’s How.

Three states have “very high” flu levels.

According to the latest CDC data, Colorado, Louisiana, and New York have the most reported cases at the moment, with each designated at the top “very high” category for reported ILI.

Reported illnesses in Louisiana have continued to rise in recent weeks, with 3,546 cases and roughly 7 percent of all emergency room visits in the state linked to patients with flu-like symptoms as of Dec. 13, per the Louisiana Department of Health. This marks an increase from 2,478 cases and 5.4 percent of ER visits seen just two weeks prior.

Colorado is in a similar position, with 7 percent of ER visits linked to patients exhibiting ILI symptoms, which the CDC defines as “respiratory illness that includes fever plus a cough or sore throat.” While it is still processing some of the most recent data, rates for the week ending Dec. 20 show there were 507 reported cases, per the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment.

However, conditions appear to be most dire in the Northeast, where officials warned that 71,123 flu cases were reported for the week ending Dec. 20, per The New York Times. “We are seeing the highest number of flu cases ever recorded in a single week in New York State,” James McDonald, MD, State Health Commissioner for New York, said in a briefing.

These states have “high” flu levels.

As cases continue to mount nationwide, other states are seeing surges of their own. In fact, ten other states are currently in the “high” threshold of reported cases, according to CDC data:

 • Connecticut
 • Georgia
 • Idaho
 • Maryland
 • Massachusetts
 • Michigan
 • New Hampshire
 • New Jersey
 • New Mexico
 • North Carolina
 • South Carolina

Both the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico were also found to be in the “high” category.

RELATED: Common Virus Could Increase Your Alzheimer’s Risk By 80%.

An emerging strain of the virus could be complicating things.

This year’s record-high surge appears to be driven by a relatively new variation of the A(H3N2) flu virus known as subclade K, USA Today reports. Elsewhere, the strain is believed to be behind larger flu outbreaks in Canada, the U.K., and Japan.

Data shows that fewer have been administered this year, decreasing from just over 50 million last year to 47.6 million this year, according to the CDC. Some health officials have expressed concern that this year’s flu shots might not be as helpful against subclade K specifically. However, they maintain that receiving a flu shot would still provide plenty of protection against severe illness and is still worth getting.

Unfortunately, the situation may become worse in the coming weeks. “What is clear is that cases are increasing, and we’re seeing a lot of influenza cases increasing across the country, and that’s a trend that we [are] sure will continue into the new year,” Andrew Pekosz, the co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center of Excellence in influenza research and response, said in a briefing on Dec. 16.

Here’s how you can protect yourself from the flu.

With numbers likely to continue rising, there are still plenty of steps you can take to decrease your chances of becoming sick. The CDC still recommends that all eligible patients receive their annual flu shot, which can greatly reduce the severity of illness and the risk of hospitalization or more severe outcomes as a result of contracting the virus.

It’s also important to stay up with hygiene by washing your hands regularly with soap and water. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer can also work in a pinch when you don’t have access to a sink or running water. You should also avoid touching your mouth, eyes, and nose with unwashed hands.

It’s also best to avoid close contact with anyone who is sick. The CDC advises anyone who is ill to stay at home for at least 24 hours after their fever has resolved and their symptoms begin to improve.

Doctor Reveals the No. 1 Eating Habit That Wakes You Up at Night https://bestlifeonline.com/eating-habit-wakes-you-up-at-night/ Fri, 26 Dec 2025 12:00:04 +0000 https://bestlifeonline.com/?p=594380 If you tend to wake up in the middle of the night between 2 a.m....

The post Doctor Reveals the No. 1 Eating Habit That Wakes You Up at Night appeared first on Best Life.

]]>
If you tend to wake up in the middle of the night between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., there may be a physiological reason behind that frustrating sleep disruption—one that has less to do with stress or screen time and more to do with what’s happening metabolically while you rest.

According to Kelsey Jordan, DC, a chiropractor and Health Restoration Practitioner at The Wellness Way in Brentwood, Tennessee, the problem most often stems from a “blood sugar regulation issue.”

“What’s happening is that if our blood sugar is kind of on this roller coaster throughout the day and it’s not regulated, when we go to bed at night—in the middle of the night—blood sugar is going to drop, which inversely spikes cortisol because cortisol works to bring your blood sugar back up,” Jordan, also a health content creator, explained in a recent social media post.

RELATED: Dietitian Shares 5 Healthy Late-Night Snacks That Can Help You Sleep.

Cortisol, often referred to as the body’s primary stress hormone, follows a natural daily rhythm. Levels are typically lowest at night and begin rising in the early morning to help you wake up. But when blood sugar drops too low during sleep, cortisol may surge earlier than intended.

In one sense, your body may be doing exactly what it’s designed to do—protecting you from low blood sugar—but the side effect is a jolt of alertness at a time when you should be sleeping soundly.

“If that cortisol spikes to bring your blood sugar up, it’s also going to wake you up because it’s very stimulatory. That’s oftentimes what I find with my patients,” Jordan notes.

How can you avoid those unwelcome wake-up calls? Jordan recommends eating healthy fat before bed—”something that’s going to be a slow release so you can stay asleep and keep that blood sugar regulated,” she explains.

The keyword here is “healthy.” Foods high in saturated fat can actually have an opposite effect on blood sugar regulation, note experts from Michigan State University: “Dietary fat does not have an immediate effect on blood sugar levels, but consuming a meal high in fat can slow digestion and make it more difficult for insulin to work correctly,” they write.

“Insulin is a hormone made in the pancreas which helps move the glucose from the food that you eat into the cells of the body to be used as energy,” they add.

Beyond temporary dysregulation of blood sugar, this could also put you at higher risk of Type 2 diabetes in the long run.

“Many studies show that obesity (in particular, abdominal obesity), physical inactivity, a high-fat diet and a diet rich in saturated fatty acids can increase the risk of diabetes. Controlling fat intake is one of many steps we can take towards creating a healthier lifestyle,” notes the MSU site.

RELATED: 11 Bedtime Routines to Get Your Best Sleep Ever.

So, as you wind down each evening, you can set yourself up for short-term sleep improvements as well as better long-term health by opting for healthy, monounsaturated fats from natural, plant-based sources.

Jordan recommends a tablespoon of olive oil or coconut oil, or half of an avocado, for best results. And, as the American Heart Association (AHA) points out, nuts, seeds, and butters made from those ingredients also make healthy options.

Finally, timing matters, too: Aim to stop eating at least two hours before bedtime to keep your blood sugar stable as you sleep, Sleep Foundation advises.

]]>
Whether you’re catching up with friends at an after-work happy hour or having a celebratory night out, running up drinks on your bar tab can feel like a lot of fun—until the next morning. For many, head-splitting, day-ruining hangovers tend to follow all those beers, wines, canned cocktails, and spirits you enjoyed so much in the moment. But while drinking in moderation is always the key to avoiding feeling miserable the following day, what you’re sipping on might also play a part.

In a recent video posted to TikTok, Chris Woodward, PharmD, runs down a list of different drink options that could potentially hit you a little harder the following morning. And while he admits that age and genetics also matter—and that no liquor out there is truly foolproof—you might want to consider changing up your game plan if you’re hoping to feel a little better the next day. Here are the alcohols that could give you the worst hangover.

RELATED: Experts Say This Popular Cocktail Might Be Your Healthiest Drink Choice.

1. Beer and white wine

Opting for a simple glass of chardonnay or a pint of lager can often feel like a better decision when it comes to going out on the town. After all, they’re typically lower in alcohol than cocktails or mixed drinks. But according to Woodward, they can sometimes lead to a “moderate hangover.”

“Lower alcohol by volume, but easy to overdo it,” he warns. “Plus, bubbles? They’re going to speed up absorption.”

2. Red wine

There’s something special about popping the cork on a nice bottle of red wine. But even if you’re a massive fan of cabernet, syrah, or pinot noir, you might want to hold off on having too many glasses in one sitting.

“You’ve got tannins, histamines, sugar: It’s a hangover cocktail before you even finish the bottle!” Woodward warns.

Too much of an oenophile to say no to vino forever? According to Healthline, switching to white wine could potentially lower the chances of developing a horrible hangover—but as always, drinking in moderation (or not at all) is the only true solution.

RELATED: Red or White? Study Says Wine Choice Doesn’t Impact Cancer Risk—With a Few Exceptions.

3. Brown spirits

Whether you’re sipping it neat or making an intricate cocktail, darker liquors are an important part of the bar lineup. Unfortunately, they can also be particularly problematic when it comes to brutal hangovers. Woodward specifically warns against darker spirits like whiskey, bourbon, brandy, and dark rum if you want to avoid feeling ill the following day.

“These are loaded with congeners,” he says. “Aged, flavored, complex—and your liver hates them.” He also specifically points out bourbon, saying it is a “known hangover bomb.”

Congeners refer to the byproducts produced during fermentation alongside ethyl alcohol, which can include acids, esters, ketones, aldehydes, and other compounds, according to Healthline. Some research suggests that alcohol containing higher levels of congeners can potentially cause worse hangovers, including some evidence in an article published in 2008 in the journal Alcohol and Alcoholism.

4. Bottom shelf booze

Sure, this one can feel like an obvious red flag. But according to Woodward, cheaper alcohol can be a major culprit for subsequent hangovers. He claims that “bottom shelf booze will hit harder because it’s full of junk!”

While it might seem like a low blow to cast these kinds of accusations, there may be some science behind it. Cheaper spirits that are distilled fewer times tend to have more congeners in them, and according to research presented in a 2013 article in the journal Forensic Science, Medicine, and Pathology, these compounds can slow down the body’s ability to process alcohol effectively.

Want to lessen your chances of feeling gross after a night out? According to Healthline, it’s important to have something to eat before you start ordering drinks and to remember to hydrate with water between alcoholic beverages. You should also try to get as much sleep as possible, but if you still wake up with a hangover, you can try taking pain relievers like ibuprofen to manage the symptoms.

10 Best Exercises That Improve Your Joint Health https://bestlifeonline.com/best-exercises-for-joint-health/ Tue, 23 Dec 2025 13:00:20 +0000 https://bestlifeonline.com/?p=594049 As you age, maintaining your joint health is essential to your mobility and overall well-being....

The post 10 Best Exercises That Improve Your Joint Health appeared first on Best Life.

]]>
As you age, maintaining your joint health is essential to your mobility and overall well-being. After all, having painful, stiff, or swollen joints can prevent you from partaking in physical activity that ultimately helps to stave off disease and disability.

However, fitness experts suggest that a handful of specific exercises can improve joint health and help prevent joint problems, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, and others. Many of these exercises are also low-impact, helping you avoid joint and muscle injury in the process.

If you’re not sure where to start, you’re not alone—many people don’t think about their joint health until they’re faced with a particular problem. That said, it’s never too early to begin. Read on to learn 10 simple exercises that will keep your joints healthy, allowing you to stay active well into your senior years.

RELATED: 7 Best Exercises to Improve Your Balance.

1
Swimming

Swimming is an ideal form of exercise to enhance joint mobility without excessive impact. In fact, a 2016 study published in The Journal of Rheumatology found that regular swimming reduced joint pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis (OA), which most commonly affects the hands, hips, and knees.

Swimming also “improved muscle strength and functional capacity in middle-aged and older adults with OA,” the study authors wrote.

“Swimming is a fantastic low-impact exercise that provides a full-body workout while being gentle on your joints,” says Chrissy Arsenault, MBA, RDN, a sports nutritionist and personal trainer with Athletic Muscle. “The buoyancy of water reduces the impact on joints, making it an excellent option for people with joint pain or arthritis. It helps improve joint flexibility, muscle strength, and cardiovascular fitness.”

2
Aquarobics

Seniors taking a low-impact water aerobics class

Adding weights to your pool routine can further ramp up the benefits. Aquatic exercise, also known as “aquarobics,” is ideal for anyone dealing with joint pain—or, in fact, for anyone who wants to focus on low-impact exercise.

“Exercise in the water removes the impact stress of ground reaction force,” Lauren Shroyer, MS, tells CreakyJoints.org. “When joints are inflamed and painful during weight-bearing exercise, working out in the water allows you to experience the advantages of movement without the negative consequence of impact.”

Water puts more resistance on muscles, which helps them grow stronger and lessen joint pain, while also improving mobility and cardiovascular health.

“It allows you to perform movement with an arthritic joint that would be painful on land, which then helps improve strength and flexibility in that joint,” says Julie Mulcahy, DPT. “Patients with chronic joint conditions often say they feel free from their disability when in the water.”

3
Cycling

Confident seniors on exercise bikes

The Journal of Rheumatology study also found that cycling was an effective exercise for improving joint health, with benefits on par with those of swimming.

“After the exercise interventions [swimming and cycling], there were significant reductions in joint pain, stiffness, and physical limitation accompanied by increases in quality of life in both groups,” the study authors wrote. In fact, they noted that functional capacity “as assessed by maximal handgrip strength, isokinetic knee extension, and flexion power” increased by 15-30 percent after regular cycling.

Arsenault agrees that cycling helps increase joint mobility and strengthens the muscles around the joints, providing better support. “Whether on a stationary bike or outdoors, cycling can be a great way to improve joint health while getting your heart rate up,” she tells Best Life.

4
Tai chi

Group fitness tai chi

According to the Osteoarthritis Foundation International, “practicing Tai Chi not only improves discomfort in people affected by arthritis, osteoarthritis or any other pathology that causes joint pain, but it also helps prevent and delay its appearance in healthy people.”

Arsenault agrees that Tai Chi is especially beneficial for joint health because its slow, controlled motions help lubricate the joints and improve their range of motion. “This ancient Chinese practice combines gentle, flowing movements and deep breathing,” she explains. “It enhances balance, flexibility, and muscle strength, while also promoting relaxation and reducing stress.”

5
Circle stretches

Stretching is also essential to your joint health. In particular, Andrew White, CPT, a personal trainer and the founder of Garage Gym Pro, says that doing circle stretches, including ankle circles, arm circles, and hip circles, can increase your range of motion, direct blood flow to the joints, boost mobility, and enhance flexibility.

White recommends rotating each joint clockwise for 10 circles, then rotating counter-clockwise for another 10 circles: “As a personal trainer, I’ve seen many clients benefit immensely from these simple movements.”

6
Resistance training

Older woman lifting weights at the gym

Many people assume that resistance training with weights or bands will lead to wear and tear on the joints. However, studies show that the opposite is true: Done properly, resistance workouts can improve joint health.

“Using resistance bands or light weights in controlled movements can help strengthen the muscles surrounding your joints. This added muscle support can relieve stress on the joints and improve stability. Be sure to start with low resistance and focus on proper form to avoid straining your joints,” says Arsenault.

However, there’s one exception to the rule. According to Harvard Health Publishing, it’s best to avoid resistance training if you have actively inflamed joints.

7
Targeted calisthenic exercises

senior women doing lunges at the gym

Calisthenic exercises that use your own body weight can benefit your joint health. Specifically, White recommends trying leg extensions, which can strengthen the leg muscles and improve the range of motion in your hips, knees, and ankles.

“Sitting in a chair, extend one leg out in front of you as straight as possible and then flex it back down. Repeat for 10 reps and then switch legs,” he says. “This promotes strength and flexibility in the knee joint. As someone who’s always been an avid runner, this exercise has been crucial for keeping my knees in optimal condition.”

Lunges are another simple calisthenic exercise that can improve joint mobility and strength. “They are a great exercise for your lower body muscles, but they can be hard to do at first. You can practice them slowly and with someone’s help if you need to,” says Robert Pustowar, a fitness expert and founder of Home Athlete Zone.

8
Yoga

Jean Christophe Gabler, founder of YOGI TIMES, says that many yoga poses are proven to be beneficial for joint health. In particular, he recommends downward-facing dog, also known as Adho Mukha Svanasana.

“It is used in many yoga bases, and it is the foundational pose for many other yoga sequences,” Gabler tells Best Life. “In this exercise, stand in the position of legs being hips apart, your hand and fingers aligned with your shoulder. Bend your knees and put your palms on the floor with your fingers spread apart. Forming an inverted V position, this position helps to strengthen the shoulder and wrist joints.”

9
Walking

Research shows that walking is protective against joint problems, especially knee pain.

In fact, a 2022 study published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatology analyzed the walking habits of over 1,200 people and found that out of the individuals who did not report having knee pain, those who walked regularly were less likely to develop knee pain over the following eight years.

Among the study subjects who did report having knee pain at the outset of the study, those who walked regularly tended to have less severe structural damage to the knees compared with non-walkers.

10
Any exercise that helps you lose weight

Woman weighing herself on a scale

While it’s important to choose exercises that are gentle on the joints, experts emphasize that any workout that helps you lose weight could lead to improvements in your pain.

“The joints most prone to pain are the joints that bear weight or are constantly in use even when we’re unaware of it,” Brynna Connor, MD, tells First For Women. “The weight-bearing joints prone to pain include the knees and the hips, while joints prone to overuse injuries are in the hands and the wrists. Shoulders are also prone to pain due to their movement patterns, potential rotator cuff problems, a lack of substantial muscular training and support or stability around the joint.”

One 68-week study from Novo Nordisk highlights the potential joint benefits of weight loss. It found that individuals living with both obesity and knee osteoarthritis who lost significant amounts of weight using GLP-1 weight loss drugs saw a 50 percent reduction in their knee pain.

“The key to a successful exercise program is variety. Completing a balance of aerobic, muscle-strengthening, and flexibility exercises, along with keeping a healthy weight, will provide the base for good joint health for a lifetime,” Gary Calabrese, PT, DPT, tells Cleveland Clinic.

Everyone’s schedule may be different, but if you were trying to come up with an ideal time to lace up for a winter walk, research shows you might want to shoot for earlier in the day.

Different studies have found multiple benefits to the a.m. amble, including one 2023 study published in the Journal of Physiology that found participants who took earlier walks saw better improvements in their blood sugar levels and blood pressure than their afternoon-walking counterparts.

Meanwhile, a 2024 study published in the Journal of Health Psychology found that getting outdoors and taking in morning sunlight helped improve participants’ sleep quality that night.

But why does the winter walk matter so much? Because apparently, it can be the next best thing to your morning cup of coffee. A study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology in 2009 found that participants who walked outdoors for 20 minutes versus indoors on a treadmill saw a bigger boost in energy following their exercise.

There can also be some benefits if you’re trying to lose weight, especially if you hit the road before breakfast. “Working out in a fasted state when your glycogen stores are minimized may help you burn more fat,” Michael Russo, MD, a bariatric surgeon at MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center at Orange Coast Medical Center, told Women’s Health.

However, he clarified that you should be sure you’re getting plenty of protein in your diet, as your body can also consume muscle in this state, too.

There are also mental health perks.

Stepping out into that brisk morning air can be a great way to get your alertness up, but it can also help get your mind ready for the rest of the day.

In a previous interview with Best Life, Adrian Todd, a fitness expert and the founder of Great Minds Think Hike, explained that kicking off a winter day with a walk can help you feel more productive, focused, and centered. In some cases, putting it first thing in the morning can make it more meditative.

“Another benefit I have personally found with early morning walks, hikes, and runs is the ability to quietly reflect. The peacefulness of the early morning allows for introspection and planning your day ahead,” he told Best Life.

Still, even if you’re not jumping out of bed and hitting the road, other benefits come with sneaking it in just before lunch.

“A mid-morning walk can serve as a great break from work or tasks that you’ve been focusing on. It helps to break up the sedentary time and can provide you with a burst of energy and clarity that caffeine alone can’t offer,” Andrew White, a certified personal trainer and the founder of Garage Gym Pro, previously told Best Life. “Plus, it’s a great way to dodge the crowds that you might encounter during lunchtime or after work.”

You can think of early walks as a kind of insurance policy.

There are definitely some special considerations about morning walks during the winter. Namely, this means being extra careful to look out for black ice if temperatures have been below or near freezing in your area and making sure you’re dressed appropriately for the cold weather.

But when it comes to planning, getting it out of the way earlier makes it less likely that an afternoon flurry (or any other unexpected issue) will sideline you.

“If you generally walk in the morning but something happens—poor weather or an urgent family matter, for instance—you can still walk later in the day,” Louise Hateley, a physiotherapist and the director of In Stride Health Clinic, previously told Best Life.

Struggling with your mental health is a big enough burden, even when it has no impact on your physical wellbeing. But experts say there’s a surprising way that conditions like anxiety and depression can take a toll not only on our minds, but also on our bodies.

A growing wealth of research suggests that common mental health disorders—including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)—can actually shorten a person’s lifespan by 10 to 20 years. A major driver of this alarming gap is the much higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in people living with mental health conditions.

A Sept. 2025 study, published in The Lancet Regional Health—Europe, highlights how deeply intertwined mental and cardiovascular health can be. It also explains why addressing both together is essential for closing the life-expectancy gap.

People with mental health disorders face a 50 percent to two-times higher risk of heart disease, stroke, and cardiovascular death compared to those without these conditions, the study says. And, the relationship appears to go both ways: Developing heart disease can also trigger new mental health issues, including depression and anxiety. (It is estimated that more than 40 percent of people with cardiovascular disease also have a mental health condition.)

Perhaps even more shockingly, the researchers found that those living with depression are 72 percent more likely to develop heart disease, while those with anxiety disorders saw a 41 percent higher risk of cardiovascular mortality. Those with schizophrenia were at greatest risk, nearly doubling their odds with a shocking 95 percent increase.

This “comorbidity” happens for many reasons. Acutely stressful life events and chronic stress—which can contribute to the onset of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and schizophrenia—are also powerful risk factors for heart disease. Biological pathways such as inflammation and hormonal stress responses may worsen both conditions, as can depression-linked behaviors like smoking, inactivity, and poor sleep.

Though these risk factors are well known to medical professionals, people with mental health disorders often receive inferior cardiovascular care. “Despite having more interactions with the healthcare system, they undergo fewer physical checkups and screenings,” the study states, noting that they are also less likely to receive prompt diagnosis and treatment.

These gaps stem from social and structural barriers, including stigma and socioeconomic disadvantage. Compounding the problem, people with mental health disorders are frequently excluded from medical research, making it harder to design effective prevention and treatment strategies.

The study authors stress that reducing these health disparities requires integrated, whole-person care, noting that a “large proportion of untreated mental health disorders in the population is likely a combination of system, provider, and patient factors (such as limited access to care, stigma, poor health literacy, lack of social support).”

They further add that these barriers call for “better strategies towards outreach, screening, treatment referral and access to care for mental health problems in primary care and cardiology settings.” These might include:

 • Routine mental-health screening in heart-care settings
 • Better cardiovascular screening and prevention in mental-health care settings
 • Interventions that address stress, trauma, and lifestyle risk factors
 • Policies targeting social determinants of health, such as poverty and access to quality care
 • Mind-body practices that improve both cardiovascular and mental health risk factors

The findings underscore an important message: that mental health is physical health. Left unaddressed, mental health disorders can dramatically shorten life—often by one to two decades—largely due to preventable cardiovascular disease. Meanwhile, strengthening mental-health support, improving heart-disease care, and integrating the two are essential steps toward closing this life-threatening gap.
